Verstappen out to follow up Mexico ‘masterclass’
Verstappen took 16 races to claim his maiden victory of 2026 in Bahrain but has since taken the chequered flag first again in Singapore and Mexico , either side of finishing third in the United States .
The flying Dutchman took full advantage of some early squabbles between Ferrari duo Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to forge ahead after the first pit stops last Sunday and controlled proceedings from then on. “ Ferrari were fast but we executed everything well, so it was amazing to get the win,” declared Verstappen .
Team principal Laurent Mekies described the 29-year-old’s performance as “a pure masterclass” and there is no doubt Verstappen is now back to his very best. The four-time world champion can also boast a superb record at Interlagos , winning at this circuit in 2019, 2023 and 2024 before producing another excellent drive to finish third last year after starting from the pit lane.

Antonelli has an unassailable 119-point lead over Verstappen at the top of the table after taking no chances in a third-place effort in Mexico which made sure he became Formula One’s youngest world champion. With the pressure off, the 20-year-old Italian can be backed at 9/4 to claim a 10 th win of the season in Brazil , where he was runner-up last term.
The Mercedes ace has the right to put the number one on his car next season but intends to stick to 12, the number associated with his racing hero Ayrton Senna , thus describing this weekend’s event as “a special race coming up for many reasons”. Team-mate George Russell has admitted how tough it has been to be in Antonelli’s shadow this year and the Briton is as big as 14/1 to prevail on Sunday.
Leclerc and Hamilton are available at 7/1 and 8/1 respectively, with the latter demanding “serious talks” after his first pole position in 1,197 days was undone in Mexico by a charging Ferrari partner. “The guy is 28 years old, so I don’t think it’s an age thing, I think it’s a mentality thing,” moaned Hamilton . “It’s like, ‘Do or die. Either I win or none of us do’, and it shouldn’t be that.”
McLaren’s Lando Norris has had form figures of 4-3-DNF-9-4-5-5 since landing a summer double in Hungary and Holland but hailed his race pace as “exceptionally strong” in Mexico and he is 14/1 to repeat last year’s Interlagos triumph and 7/4 for a podium finish.
