Russell remains in confident mood
Russell was hampered by a qualifying issue in Shanghai and did not get the rub of the green regarding a safety car incident when only fourth at Suzuka . However, boosted by the experience of 155 starts, the 28-year-old showed no signs of panic as he reflected: "At the moment, every issue we are having is on my side of the garage, and I am the one going through that pain.
"Sometimes people have problems in practice. We have not had a single issue in practice, but I have had problems in qualifying instead. It is the luck of the draw with these new cars. "But it is race three of 22, and I am not concerned at all. It is a long year, and I know I have got what it takes to bounce back. I won't dwell on it."
McLaren made a big improvement in Japan, and Oscar Piastri is 9/1 to go one better than his Suzuka runner-up effort in Miami , with team-mate and reigning world champion Lando Norris an 11/1 shot. With Ferrari having been very solid so far, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton can be backed at 14/1 and 16/1 respectively, but sulking Max Verstappen is as big as 33/1 following Red Bull 's slow start.
New Rules Drama
F1 bosses react to criticism of new regulations
There have been some alterations made to the radical new rules, which have allowed Mercedes to dominate so far, but they have been described as refinements, rather than sweeping changes. Energy harvesting, which helps the driver charge the battery, will be reduced from eight megajoules to seven, and the hybrid power unit will be increased from 250kw to 350kw.
Both changes are aimed at allowing drivers to go flat-out for longer in qualifying, rather than having to lift off the throttle as regularly on a fast lap. Reacting to Ollie Bearman 's 191mph crash in Japan , the boost button will now be capped at 150kw, while the MGU-K remains at 350kw in key acceleration zones but is limited to 250kw when the driver is not in a straight-line section.
Mercedes principal Toto Wolff should be content with that outcome after stating: "It's how can we improve the product, make it out-and-out racing, and look at what can improve in terms of safety, but act with a scalpel and not with a baseball bat."
