McLaren’s reigning world champion was comfortably leading the Spanish Grand Prix when Lance Stroll crashed on the 14th lap. Norris drove past the pit-lane entry just as a Virtual Safety Car was deployed and when he eventually got in a lap later than his pursuers, a slow front-right tyre change cost him even more time.
Having held a seven-second advantage over Kimi Antonelli prior to Stroll’s accident, Norris left the pits 13 seconds adrift of the Italian . The Briton began to demonstrate the speed that should have won him the race, but on a track where overtaking was almost impossible, he ultimately had to settle for a close third behind Antonelli and Max Verstappen.

Reflecting on the Madrid misfortune, Norris said: “We were just insanely unlucky. I was the only one on the whole grid who didn’t get a chance to do a pit-stop. That is just unfortunate.
"It has happened in races before, and I have gained from it in the past, but I have lost a win this time and that is frustrating. I felt like I deserved more. It just hurts because there was nothing more I could do as a driver. I got pole, I led the race, and to lose it for nothing in my control is not how a race should be won.”

Antonelli is firmly on course to drive into the history books and usurp Sebastian Vettel as the sport’s youngest world champion following back-to-back victories at Monza and the Madring . The 20-year-old is 81 points clear of Mercedes team-mate George Russell in the standings and a firm favourite at 6/5 to make it nine wins this season in Baku .
Russell finished only fifth in the Spanish capital and proclaimed the title race as good as over, but the Briton remains focused on finishing the season strongly, stating: “It allows me to focus race-by-race and try and win as many races as possible.”
The Briton has never won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix but has made the podium three times in his last four visits, so 10/11 for him to achieve another top-three finish is a fair price. Russell is available at 6/1 for a third race win of the year, with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen both quoted at 7/1 and Charles Leclerc 9/1.
The last-named Ferrari driver claimed pole in Baku four times on the bounce between 2021 and 2024 and can be backed at 7/2 to be the fastest qualifier on Friday.
