It’s safe to say that the eight heats for the third round of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby are sensational with all eyes immediately drawn to heat 4.
The Patrick Guilfoyle trained Explosive Boy is the 5/4 favourite to win his heat in what will be his biggest and toughest test in some time. The speedy son of Good News faces one of the best bitches in the country in Ballymac Ariel, the talented and improving Jacob Tashadelek, Corn Cuchulainn winner Priceless Jet, Trap Joey and Spinosaurus.
The sponsors have made Explosive Boy the 7/2 from 5/1 antepost favourite to pick up the €125,000 prize next month and punters are convinced he will win his heat this Saturday.
Ariel is not far behind in the heat betting as the 6/4 second favourite while Jacob Tashadelek is 10/3 ahead of Priceless Jet at 7/1. It’s a cracking heat with four heat winners in there from the second round and three greyhounds who are unbeaten so far in the competition.
Jackslittlething looks to have an easier heat than Explosive Boy with his odds at a red-hot 4/9 to get the better of Beach Avenue (4/1), No Green Dye (6/1), Monraud Thunder (6/1), Tradesman (16/1) and Coolavanny Sando (40/1). Jackslittlething has superior early pace that should see him take up the lead and make all, while Beach Avenue will be flying home as usual.
Not much separates Susie Sapphire and Swords Maestro at 11/8 and 15/8 respectively in heat 8. Susie has beautiful early pace, so it’s easy to see why she is the favourite. She will however have to produce her fast start as it’s a competitive heat with Grangeview Mac (5/1), Droopys Yes (7/1), Re Sure (8/1) and Callmesteve (10/1).
Liam Dowling’s Ballymac Wild is the 4/5 favourite in heat 1 as well as Ballymac Fairone who is the 7/4 favourite to win heat 2.
Pat Buckley’s Deerjet Sydney is 2/1 to outrun Scooby Princess (9/4) in heat 3 while Deadly Destroyer is 11/10 to win heat 5. Liam Dowling could have a brilliant night with Ballymac Art 5/4 favourite to win heat 6 ahead of Pierno who is 11/4.
