The two teams were heavily linked together over the transfer of Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window. It seemed all but a given that de Jong would sign with the Red Devils but the move never ended up going through.
Man United and Ten Hag were eager to make a big move to bolster their midfield while Barcelona wanted the money from the sale to help ease their much-publicised financial struggles. De Jong decided that he wanted to stay put.
These two teams had very different routes in getting to this stage of the Europa League. Erik Ten Hag’s side bounced back from an opening round defeat to Real Sociedad to win their next five games and finish in 2nd place in Group E.
Barcelona on the other hand are in the Europa League courtesy of a disappointing Champions League campaign where they finished 3rd behind Bayern and Inter Milan to be demoted to this competition.
Man United will be targeting success in this competition as a building block for the future under their new manager. Barcelona will be looking forward to use this competition as a building block too as they continue to develop with some of the talented young players in their squad.
Jose Mourinho’s Roma have been drawn against RB Salzburg of Austria after finishing 2nd to Real Betis in the group stage. Roma won the inaugural Conference League last season and they will hope to build on that by winning the Europa League this year.
