Former Cork dual star Eoin Cadogan has backed calls for Hurling referees to be supported with a video assistant.
VAR The Solution To Hurling’s Problems?
The ex-full back, who won Munster titles with the county Hurlers in 2014 and 2018, was speaking exclusively to BoyleSports following a spate of red cards in the National League, but insisted any changes in Hurling should be minimal after radical amendments to the football rule book.
“In general I would stay away from rule changes in Hurling,” Cadogan told BoyleSports.
“The one thing I would look at, and there’s been a lot of attention about it, is head-high contact. We had eight red cards a couple of weeks ago, but will there be consistency in a few weeks times when we go into the Championship?
“I do think referees need some sort of help with the pace of the game – can we help them and what does it look like? Is it two referees on the pitch? Or is it a VAR situation where there is a massive decision to make and they analyse whether it was head contact or not, and is it a red? Referees are human, they only have a split second, so let’s help them out.
“That would be the only rule change I’d make in Hurling. We’ve got one of the fastest field sports games and as a spectacle, it’s incredible. And it’s only getting better.”
