Night 1 Match Card
Night 1
The Vision & IShowSpeed vs The Usos & LA Knight
The Vision (Logan Paul and Austin Theory) and IShowSpeed @ 7/4 vs The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) and La Knight @ 2/5
WrestleMania Night 1 is set to be opened by this high-energy six-man tag match, which typifies the cross-pop culture appeal of the event.
In the red corner, we’ve The Vision with Logan Paul, and since debuting at WrestleMania 38, he’s gone from a novelty act to a genuine fixture of the main roster, constantly putting in show-stopping performances, which has him gone from a resident “outsider” to a crucial fixture of the company. He will be partnered by Austin Theory , who, at 28, has long been revered as one of the company's best up-and-comers and a YouTube personality, IShowSpeed , who makes his in-ring debut here.
On the other side of the ring will be the “ Usos ”, who first debuted in the company in May 2010, forming a crucial component of the tag team scene, playing a key role in the “ Bloodline ” storyline and with even Jey crashing their respective glass ceilings when at WrestleMania 41, when he defeated Gunther by submission to become World Heavyweight Champion. The Usos will be joined by LA Knight, who is an exceptional example of how, through graft and pure ability, he has positioned himself as one of the most organically over Superstars in the Modern Era.
Though it’s the show opener, I think the heels are underrated in the odds here, and I can see The Vision winning perhaps through some in-fighting between Jey Uso and La Knight, who have been constantly at each other's throats.
Jacob Fatu vs Drew Mclntyre
Jacob Fatu @ 1/6 vs Drew Mclntyre @ 7/2
Jacob Fatu comes from the famous Anoaʻi family , as the son of Sam Fatu and the nephew of both Rikishi and Umaga . There were always going to be considerable expectations on what he could do in his career, but last year, during his debut at the “show of shows”, he defeated LA Knight for the United States Championship. He lost his Championship at Night of Champions to Sola Sikoa due to interference from The Bloodline last June, and after losing his rematch, he was sidelined from October to January of this year. However, he clearly still has the aura, athleticism and attitude to become the next Main Eventer from the famous family.
The Scottish Warrior Drew McIntyre has quite the story, from being the company's designated “ Chosen One ” in 2009, which didn’t exactly go as planned, with him being released in 2014, before he found his feet on the indie scene. He returned to the company in 2017, ascending to the top of the card, including four World Title reigns.
Following several brutal brawls, this “unsactioned” no-barred bout could end up in the stands or anywhere and everywhere in between! Though Drew’s ability to make something of everything given to him is remarkable, I still expect him to put over the younger upstart
Stephanie Vaquer (c) vs. Liv Morgan
Stephanie Vaquer (c) @ 7/2 vs. Liv Morgan @ 1/6
Stephanie Vaquer only made her Main Roster debut after WrestleMania 41 and has had an impressive first year. She competed in the Money in the Bank ladder match before winning the Battle Royal at Evolution, before going on to win the vacant Women’s World Championship at Wrestlepalooza after defeating Iyo Sky via pinfall, and has held the title since.
Liv Morgan has been on the Main Roster for almost a decade since forming a part of “ The Riott Squad ” in late 2017. However, at 31, she remains one of the youngest on the roster and boasts an exceptional CV as a two-time Women’s World Champion , Crown Jewel Champion , four-time Tag Team Champion and Money in the Bank winner. Liv’s stock went to another level last November when she returned in Dominick Mysterio's match against John Cena . Though she initially slapped Mysterio (as a fake-out), she low-blowed Cena , allowing Mysterio to hit his finisher and win the title back. Thus starting " Liv Morgan Revenge Tour " which culminated in her Royal Rumble victory earlier this year after years of hard luck stories, notably being runner-up in the 2023 and 2024 events.
Vaquer is a star, but Liv’s trajectory seems to be on a whole other level now, and a win at the weekend, perhaps via shenanigans with a Babyface turn down the line, looks very much on the cards.
AJ Lee (c) vs. Becky Lynch
AJ Lee (c) @ 11/4 vs. Becky Lynch @ 1/4
“Your favourite wrestler’s favourite wrestler”, AJ Lee returned to WWE last September following a decade away to support her husband in his feud with Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch to attack the latter, and they’ve been embroiled in a bitter feud ever since. AJ , during her stint in WWE , single-handedly raised the bar for women’s wrestling in the company in an era where they weren’t being taken seriously. She shattered the glass ceiling and became one of the most over Superstars in the company.
With the ceiling shattered, Becky Lynch effectively raised the bar for the perception of Women’s Wrestling in 2015, going from being an Irish Dancing caricature to being “ The Man”, a WrestleMania Main Eventer and someone who transcended wrestling.
Though this match is effectively a “Clash of Eras”, remarkably, both women are effectively the same age, with Becky actually three months older! I can see this going either way, but AJ Lee represents a value bet.
Women's Tag Match
The Irrestible Forces (Nia Jax and Lash Legend) (c) @ 4/1 vs Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss @ 8/1 vs Bayley and Lyra Valkyria @ 8/11 vs The Bella Twins (Brie Bella and Nikki Bella) @ 5/4
Champions, the “ Irrestible Forces ” combine a blend of powerful veteran Nia Jax alongside upstart Lash Legend , who seems to have all the tools to surpass the career of her partner in time and ascend the card. who already seems to have the power, aura and in-ring ability to ascend the card in the years to come and maybe even surpass the career of Nia . Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss are already future Hall of Famers, but their “frenemy” relationship has really added a strings to their respective character arcs.
Bayley's extensive WWE resume is arguably the most impressive of all, given her seemingly selfless nature, constantly helping others, and her partnership with rising Dubliner Lyra Valkyria is another example of that selflessness. The Bella Twins round off the match, and even with their detractors, they’ve played a vital role in the rise of Women’s Wrestling. Though there are rumours Nikki Bella may miss the event through injury, the team deserve to be there if cleared to compete.
This match is one of the hardest to predict, but you’d have to fancy the team of Bayley and Lyra to get the win, maybe via some “accidental” cheating.
Best Bet: Bayley & Lyra Valkyria @ 8/11
Seth Rollins vs Gunther
Seth Rollins @ 11/4 vs Gunther @ 1/4
Seth Rollins has been a company stalwart since debuting with The Shield (alongside Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose ) in 2012. He’s gone on to have 17 title reigns, including six world titles. The Architect is also a Grand Slam Champion, a two-time Money in the Bank winner, and a Royal Rumble winner. Though his accolades are extensive, it feels like he's never received the mega push his work ethic deserves
Gunther has been the biggest recent star built by the company since his promotion from NXT in 2022. His Intercontinental Title reign of 666 days is the longest ever; he’s a two-time World Champion, with one reign lasting 259 days. More recently, he’s been positioned as the company's modern-day “ Legend Killer ” after defeating John Cena in his last match, along with ending the career of AJ Styles earlier this year.
Though there’s very little story here, Seth’s daring attitude and exceptional technical skills when put up against a 6'4", 250lbs powerhouse, this has the makings of a match of the weekend.
Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Randy Orton
Cody Rhodes (c)@ 6/4 vs. Randy Orton (with Pat McAfee) @ 1/2
Night 1 of WrestleMania will be headlined by two company legends who have close to two decades of history together after first being “introduced” on-screen in July 2007.
Though he comes from a family steeped in wrestling, Cody Rhodes was never really seen as a future “top guy” during his initial stint in WWE from 2007 before being released in 2016, despite always making the best of the cards the company dealt with; his potential was always clear, even if it was initially never recognised.
Rhodes redemption arc was built away from the company, crafting a reputation on the indie scene as both a producer, performer and everything in between with the likes of Ring of Honor , TNA , New Japan Wrestling, and ironically being a founding member of WWE’s now biggest rival, All Elite Wrestling. It always felt like he had an unfinished story with his former employers He returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38, and the rest is history. Two WrestleMania main events (including last year alongside John Cena at his final WrestleMania ), a world title reign, and a legacy cemented on his own terms. Though he did theoretically finish his “story”, he’s gone on to add multiple bonus chapters to it and is unquestionably the newfound “Quarterback” in the company.
Randy Orton is very much the antithesis of Cody Rhodes’s existence, certainly when it comes to their early days in WWE.
While Cody had to leave to prove his worth. Randy has always been held in such high esteem. In a company where no one is truly safe from release, he's spent two decades at the top. He’s pretty much never left the top of the card since becoming the youngest World Champion at 24 in August 2004, after two decades plus with the company, his list of achievements includes 14 World Title reigns, a Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion , four tag title wins, a Money in the Bank success and two Royal Rumbles . This bout has been close to two decades in the making, following their days together as part of the third-generation wrestling stable “ The Legacy ” from 2008-2010 alongside Ted DiBiase Jr . The pair have remained close ever since, and even upon Cody’s return to the company has publicly thanked Randy for his career. The respect between them has always been there.
Unfortunately, despite their loaded history, it feels like there’s been far too much left unsaid. Even Randy’s line about their being “more than one wrestling royal family” (a nod to Cody’s theme song). The answer fell flat with the introduction of Pat McAfee, and Jelly Roll has diluted the match's aura rather than enhancing it.
There's too much left unresolved for this to end cleanly over the weekend. Expect drama, a Cody Heel turn? A return from The Rock ? We will have to wait and see.
