The English Greyhound Derby is underway and some of the quickest hounds from the UK and Ireland are currently battling it out for the most prestigious race in UK Greyhound Racing and arguably only topped by the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.

The reigning Champion is Gaytime Nemo who was trained by Irish-based trainer Graham Holland, the last English-trained winner of the competition came in 2021 when Thorn Falcon trained by Patrick Janssens won the prize.

English Greyhound Derby Quarter-Final Tips & Preview

Heat 1

The first heat of the Quarter Finals is arguably the most open from a betting perspective with all six dogs boasting major qualification claims for next week's semi-final.

In Trap (1) Superfast Gordon is a 5/2 shot for this race and he has yet to find himself outside the first two so looks well-positioned to achieve all-important qualification again this week after drawing his Trap (1) for the third time from four rounds. Trap (2) Gaytime Nemo is seen as a 9/2 shot and is a consistent trapper posting a split of 4.06 in each of the three rounds of the Derby so far.

Trap (3) Crafty Shivoo is the 11/8 favourite for this race having won every round he’s faced so far in 29.33, 28.59 and 28.82. In Trap (4) Droopys Pivotel is a lightly raced youngster who earned his first heat victory in a career-best 28.93 last week and is 12/1

Trap (5) Grouchos Duke earned his first heat victory last week in 28.98 and can be gotten at 10/1 he is joined on the outside by Trap (6) Churchfield Syd at 6/1 who always gets a run on the outside/

Crafty Shivoo may be the most likely winner but at 11/8 I’d be avoiding, Droopys Pivotel each-way at 12/1 is a good value bet.

Heat 2

Trap (1) King Memphis has all sorts of gears, going unbeaten so far in the competition clocking 28.68, 28.78 and 28.74 it’s no surprise he is a 2/7 favourite for this race. In (2) Ballymac Gizmo is a lightly raced youngster not two until July and keeps qualifying, if you fancy the same Saturday he is 12/1 to win this race.

Trap (3) Whyaye Man is making incremental improvements each week and last week came third in 28.98. If you fancy further improvement the dog is 20/1 to claim a shock success here while Trap (4) Ballymac Finn is a veteran tracker with plenty of pace but would need a career-best effort at Towcester to figure at 9/1.

Trap (5) Hawkfield Abbie is 33/1 and continues to qualify each round at big prices and Trap (6) Ballinabola Ed at 5/1 has early pace to burn which always gives him a chance.

King Memphis is the likely winner again, but I’d back Ballinabola Ed each way to make his early pace count on Saturday.

Heat 3

Trap (1) Edwards has quietly gone about his business and with the luck of the draw has two heat wins and one second place despite not clocking quicker than 28.98. However, in this heat, plenty of improvement on the clock will be needed at 16/1. In (2) Hawkfield Blue is a lightly raced sort who has dipped under the 29 seconds twice from three rounds, he can be gotten at 8/1.

With Trap (4) vacant, The Other Kobe is expected to have an even clearer run to success as he looks to win his eighth race in a row at 2/5 from Trap (3).

On the outside is where the race could get interesting, Trap (5) Ballymac Slick is a young dog who continues to improve his trapping and is priced at 5/1. In (6) Droopys Doughnut had a huge improvement in clock last week in success and is priced at 7/1.

The Other Kobe is the worthy favourite here, but the battle on the outside from (5) and (6) will be very interesting. I think Ballymac Slick at 5/1 is a good each-way bet.

Heat 4

The final heat of the Quarter Final.

In Trap (1) Cooliogold is consistent on the clocks and while not the flashiest it means he has kept qualifying throughout with two heat victories and one second place. However, at odds of 6/1, it suggests that an improvement is required to figure here. Trap (2) Bockos Thunder at 8/1 is a young lightly raced dog who is improving on his trapping each week.

Trap (3) Coss Tokyo is another young dog who is a strong running sort, always finding a way to qualify at 20/1. He is a big price for this race. He is joined in the middle by Trap (4) De Lahdedah who has taken this competition by storm with his performances so it’s no surprise he is an 8/13 favourite.

Trap (5) Beatties Sparkle is likely to go off the biggest-priced dog of the night at 66/1, while well back on the clocks this gutsy bitch always finds a way to qualify and is in this race of her merit. In Trap (6) BoyleSports Bob has talent but we haven’t quite seen the peak of his abilities yet, but this race would be the perfect time for that at 3/1.

De Lahdedah is a very worthy favourite, but my value bet is Bockos Thunder at 8/1 to qualify each way.
