The English Greyhound Derby is underway and some of the quickest hounds from the UK and Ireland are currently battling it out for the most prestigious race in UK Greyhound Racing and arguably only topped by the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.

The reigning Champion is Gaytime Nemo who was trained by Irish-based trainer Graham Holland, the last English-trained winner of the competition came in 2021 when Thorn Falcon trained by Patrick Janssens won the prize.

English Greyhound Derby 2nd Round Heats 9-16

Heat 9

The first heat of Saturday Night has Trap (2) Unreal Bruiser as the favourite for Diane Henry at 9/4 following a 28.91 victory in his first-round heat which puts him 31 spots ahead of closest challenger Trap 3 Azuritte for Peter Cronin (based on last weeks runs).  Trap (1) Coss Tokyo who ran well to qualify is 9/2.

On the outside, there is two “Clona” dogs with Clona Curley another for Diane Henry who won in 29.24 last week having previously done 28.94 is 2/1. Clona Kody in Trap (6) has the fastest sectional from last week in this heat and could get a run at 6/1. However, my bet is veteran Mr Chelm ar 5/1 each way and should come on from his run last week which was his first since November

Heat 10

Arguably one of the toughest heats to predict of Round 2 there is plenty of ability from 1 to 6 in this race.  Trap (1) Singalong Dolly at 6/1 is a strong running sort for Pat Buckley,  Trap (2) Bantick Bear clocked 28.78 for the Janssens last week and is 2/1 along with Trap 3 for Graham Holland High Trend who clocked 29.07

Trap (4) Merits Inclusion at 11/2 for Brendan Matthews is a progressive dog with plenty of pace and Trap (5) Droopys Supply for the Janssens was a 29.22 winner last week and has plenty of improvement at 12/1, Finally Balinbola Ed at 5/1 may be approaching his 4th birthday but still has the gears to challenge at 5/1.

Droopys Supply at 12/1 is my each-way bet here.

Heat 11

Trap (1) Ballymac Gizmo at 5/1 is a strong staying sort for the Dowlings and was 2nd in 29.23 last week for bitch not two until July.  Trap (2) Jaytee Craze has previously clocked 28.88 but failed to get a run after a bad bump so qualified 2nd in 29.49 but a price of 11/4 suggests the dog will come on from the run. Trap 3 Keefill Goose at 12/1 is the race outside but looks to be a progressive sort.

Trap (4) Faypoint Harvey has previously done 28.85 but after failing to come away last week did 29.76 and is 5/2 here. Trap (5) Antigua Hawk has serious early gears for Pat Buckley and clocked 28.81 last week. Droopys Doughnut finally should get a run at 5/1

Trap (5) Antigua Hawk at 3/1 to show early dash, make all and win

Heat 12

Another very open race with very little separating each of the six dogs in the betting. Trap (1) Faypoint Sean for Graham Holland qualified last week, but has plenty of lengths of improvement in him at 3/1.  Trap (2) Rojo Joey is an early-paced sort who found trouble last week but having previously stopped the clock in 28.98 has major claims at 6/1. Trap (3) Crafty Shivoo trained by Mark Walis has claims.

Trap (4) Romeo Steel won in 29.07 for Graham Holland but has clocked even quicker and is a 10/3 chance. Trap (5) Ballymac Stick for the Dowling team is 3/1 and Cooper Ella in 6 for the Hutton team is the race outsider at 29.24

This is a race I’d avoid punting on, if pushed Romeo Steel at 10/3 is a good price.

Heat 13

Trap (1) Edwards clocked 28.98 in victory last week and is a 5/1 chance, but “Superstar” tracker Ballymac Drapper who clocked slower last week is hotly fancied to improve at 15/8. Trap (3) El Tornillo is a strong stayer at 14/1.

Trap (4) Droopys Suprstar at 16/1 is a rank outsider and Trap (5) Aero Convey is another consistent greyhound.  In Trap (6) BoyleSports Bob is hotly fancied to win this race after a 28.87 last week he is 11/10 to win.

Trap (1) Each-Way at 5/1 and Trap (6) to win at 11/10.

Heat 14

Trap (1) Jim By Two at 8/1 qualified as one of the fastest fourth-place finishers, but needs to find considerable improvement on recent form. Ballymac Finn in (2) is one of the fastest in the competition even if getting on, but is hugely fancied at 6/4. Trap (3) Hawkfield Abbie is a strong finishing sort at 5/1.

In (4) Glorious Tom at 9/2 is a consistent sort albeit not the paciest in the competition Queen Leona at 5/1 is a strong running bitch. Trap (6) Savanna Jackpot at 5/1 was badly drawn last week but did well to qualify.

Savanna Jackpot each way at 5/1

Heat 15

Trap (1) Grouchos Duke is 4/1 having gotten an all-important qualification spot last week and has early pace to burn. (2) Antigua Kestrel at 4/1 didn’t quite show last week but has a 28.03 on the clock at Limerick in Ireland, in (3) Whyaye Man at 6/1 was an impressive second behind Unreal Bruiser last week.

Lightly raceed Droopys Pivotel at 9/4 is the hot fancy in this race and is joined by Newinn Port 10/3 an experienced Towcester campaigner for Graham Holland and fast finishing Wasted Monday at 8/1 on the outside.

Trap (3) Whyaye Man at 6/1 as an each-way bet

Heat 16

In the final heat of round two, Trap (1) Foggy Bottom at 18/1 qualified as one of the fastest fourths last week and will need a big improvement to figure, similar to Trap (2) Makeit Flo who qualified in 3rd last week at 40/1.  Trap (3) Never Say No for Seamus Cahill did well in second last week and is 5/2.

Cochise in (4) ran well last week in third place in a hot heat and is 4/1 for this one, while Trap (5) Miracle was even quicker in third place and is expected to improve at 6/4. Bramble Elvis in 6 is bred in the purple ar 4/1 but has failed to show the pace he is capable of in recent runs.

This is one of the weaker heats, I think Bramble Elvis in 6 if returning to form has a solid claim.
