The Form - England vs USA Prediction

England’s Form

England came into this tournament as one of the favourites to win the tournament and they have cemented that status with their opening game win. You can currently back the Three Lions to win the World Cup at 7/1 which makes them third favourites behind only Brazil and France. In Group B betting the English are strong odds-on favourites to top the group at 1/7.

The impressive 6-2 demolition of Iran will have lifted the confidence in this squad as they come into this game with the USA. Iran are the 20th ranked nation in the world so a four-goal victory is nothing to be sniffed at.

The pre-tournament form had not been as convincing for England as they had been without a win in six games. They had three draws and three losses over that stretch. Everything seems to be clicking in terms of the attack for the Three Lions with nine goals scored in their last two games. Defensively however there are still questions to be answered.

The USA’s Form

The USA played Wales in their World Cup opening match which ended in a 1-1 draw. The United States dominated proceedings in the opening half so you would have expected them to ease to a victory against the Welsh.

Things did not go to plan however in the second half for Gregg Berhalter’s side as a change in Wales’ tactics and personnel caused them serious issues. For all the USA’s possession (58.9%) they only managed one shot on target over the 90 minutes. This gives serious cause for concern as they prepare to for a step up in a class against this England side.

The US famously pulled off a 1-1 draw with England at the 2010 World Cup and will be aiming to pull off a similar feat this time around.

How The Two Teams Match Up

England’s Attack

This England side are ranked 5th in FIFA’s World Rankings and that ranking is in large part due to their proficiencies in the attacking areas of the pitch. Gareth Southgate’s side proved how deadly they can be up front once again against Iran by putting six past the Iranians.

The USA should provide a better test than Iran for this England attack. The Three Lions lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation in their opener and given the success that they had I would expect them to line up in the same way this time around.

Harry Kane is the star of this attack and even though he didn’t find the net in the last game he was still the focal point of the attack. Kane also provided a brilliant assist for Sterling’s goal. It is unlikely that Southgate makes any changes although Phil Foden will be disappointed that he didn’t start in the last game. A potential Foden for Mount switch isn’t out of the question.

Saka and Sterling are nailed on to keep their spots on the wing after brilliant performances last time out.

USA’s Defence

The USA only conceded one goal in their World Cup opener against Wales in a 1-1 draw. They held out until the 82nd minute too before Gareth Bale’s penalty ultimately split the points in their Group B affair.

The United States played a 4-3-3 formation in that opening match and it worked well for them in the opening half. They pressed Wales high and stopped them from getting any consistent spell of possession.

However, once Wales brought on Kieffer Moore up front they had success in holding possession and putting the game to the US. A high press style will be a lot more dangerous against this England team who have plenty of pace and quality in attack along with great playmakers in midfield.

It will be interesting to see if the USA change tactics for this game against England. If they don’t, I have a feeling they might end up regretting it.

USA’s Attack

The USA bossed possession against Wales but only had one goal to show for all their possession. The one shot on goal was particularly disappointing given how dominant they were in the first half of the game.

Pulisic is this team’s biggest threat in the attack and he is liable to both score and set up goals for this US side. Weah popped up to score a goal against Wales and he has that ability to cut inside from his spot on the wing and be a danger.

England's Defence

England set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Iran and it will be fascinating to see if they stick with that for this game against the USA. Southgate has shown a liking for a five-back approach with three central defenders and two wing backs.

That approach made more sense in the past when England didn’t have a high quality of attacking players. Nowadays, England have a group of players that probably are suited better to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

With the USA being a better team on paper than Iran there is the chance that Southgate reverts to a five-back system but I think many England fans will be hoping he keeps the shape that saw this team dominate against Iran.

The weakest part of this England defence is through the middle and I don’t think that the USA have the players to exploit that weakness so I’d expect England to not concede many chances in this game. As the tournament progresses however, they could be exposed in this part of the pitch.

Prediction and Best Bet

England look the much better team going into this game and I think they have the quality to put a few goals past the USA. So I’m going with England to win both halves boosted to 10/3 from 3/1 as the best bet for this game.

Goalscorer Betting Odds

In the goalscorer betting I fancy Harry Kane to get his name on the scoresheet after he failed to score against Iran. Kane to score 2+ goals has been boosted to 5/1 from 9/2 and against the US’s centre back pair this looks like a good value.

Apart from Kane I think Bukayo Saka to score anytime at 2/1 looks like it could be worth a punt after the Arsenal man found the net twice against Iran.
