England's Form

England come into this tournament as one of the favourites in the betting to win the World Cup. At BoyleSports we have the Three Lions at 7/1 to win the trophy which makes them the fourth favourite in the betting behind only Brazil, Argentina and France.

So that tells you that this team is heavily respected by odds makers. This respect is earned due to the level of talent on this team. When you consider the likes of Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham this team should be very dangerous when in possession.

Despite all the talent on this England squad, there is some cause for concern for England fans going into this Iran game. In this team’s last six games they are without a win with three draws and three losses. The last time we saw this England team play they drew 3-3 with Germany in Wembley at the end of September.

The encouraging signs from that game are that this team are back in scoring form. The defence will be a concern however as this team has been leaking goals. Iran are not at the level of the other teams England have faced in this recent slump so you can expect that this is the perfect game for them to start off this tournament.

Iran's Form

This Iran team are in pretty good form as they head into this game. In qualifying for this tournament they finished top of their group which included South Korea. In the qualifiers they won eight of their ten games with one draw and only one loss in those games.

Recent international results also look good for Iran with three wins, one draw and two losses out of their last six fixtures. The most impressive of these results being a 1-0 victory over Uruguay this September.

So at first glance the form coming into this game would appear to favour the Iranians but that doesn’t tell the whole story here. You have to remember that the level of competition is incomparable. England have been playing against some of the better teams in Europe, although there are some terrible results in there too, while Iran have done well against a much worse level of competition.

How The Teams Match Up

England Attack vs Iran Defence

In this game against Iran Harry Kane will be starting at Striker for Southgate’s side. Kane has been one of the best strikers in the world over the last five years and is sure to be a handful for this Iran defence. The Tottenham star has the second most goals in the Premier League this season with 12, behind only Erling Haaland.

The Midfield Battle

England should dominate possession in this game, and this will mean that the playmakers in this team can thrive here against Iran. This team’s two biggest threats with the ball at their feet are Phil Foden of Manchester City and Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund. Foden will likely be playing in a more advanced position and has the ability to not only unlock defenses with his passing and dribbling but he is also liable to bang in goals himself.

Iran Attack vs England Defence

There are a couple interesting questions surrounding Southgate’s plans with this England team heading into this game and the tournament as a whole. The Three Lions have done their best under Southgate’s management when they have adapted a three-man back line.

In this game it wouldn’t be a surprise if England play four at the back but when they come up against the better teams they may well shift to a three back set up. You should expect England to be comfortable in defence in this game. Iran have not scored more than one goal in their last four international matches.

Best Bet

With the obvious advantages that England have in both attack and defence the best bet here is our Price Boost on England to win both halves which was 2/1 and is now boosted to 5/2!

Goalscorer Betting

In the goalscorer betting market you have to look at Harry Kane first. Kane is in a perfect position to put the ball in the back of the Iran net here and maybe even two or three times. Remember that Kane won the Golden Boot at the last World Cup and three of his six goals in that tournament came against a weak Panama team during the group stages. Iran look like they could be Panama for Kane this time around.

At BoyleSports we have Kane to score two or more goals boosted from 2/1 to 5/1! That Price Boost looks like the best value in this market but a Kane hattrick at 20/1 also looks like decent value.
