England v Switzerland Preview
England’s Form
England dominantly qualified for Euro 2024 with 6 wins and 2 draws from their group with Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. That put them 6 clear of Italy and Ukraine following 22 goals scored and only 4 conceded. Their pre-tournament form in 2024 was a mixed bag losing to Brazil 0-1 and having a 2-2 draw against Belgium. In their June warm-up fixtures, they beat Bosnia 3-0 and lost 0-1 against Iceland.
Throughout Euro 2024 England have been putting in sub-standard performances aplenty, struggling to a 0-1 win over Serbia and drawing 1-1 with Denmark. The media chatter continues to intensify and despite calls for Southgate to release the shackles and experiment against Slovenia, they put in another drab showing drawing 0-0 which ironically meant they won the group. They got over Slovakia in the Round of 16 by the skin of their teeth. Bellingham's 95th-minute equaliser sent it into extra-time where Kane’s 91st-minute goal proved to be the winner.
Southgate was initially appointed on an interim basis in 2016 and has remained in the role since. However, despite some justifiable criticisms of his tenure England have become a more consistent force on the international stage under him coming 4th at the 2018 World Cup, Euro 2020 runners-up and most recently a Quarter-Final appearance at the 2022 World Cup.
England have averaged 11.3 shots per game, 59.4% of possession, a pass completion rate of 88.8% and 14 aerials won. However, despite failing to perform as of yet, they remain only two wins away from another Euro Championship Final.

Switzerland’s Form
Switzerland qualified for the tournament coming runner-up in their group with 17 points, 5 less than Romania after a record of 4 wins, 5 draws and 1 loss; they were also top-scorers with 22 goals and conceded 11. Swiss are unbeaten in 2024 and opened it with a 0-0 draw against Denmark and a 0-1 win over Ireland back in March. Ahead of Euro 2024 they played two warm-up fixtures beating Estonia 4-0 and drew 1-1 with Austria.
In their opening game of the tournament, they had a 1-3 win over Hungary and following two 1-1 draws in quick succession against Scotland and Germany they secured their passage to the knockout rounds. In their Round of 16 game against Italy, they overcame the odds to secure a 2-0 win.
Murat Yakin has been in charge since the 9th of August 2021 and has managed 17 wins, 13 draws and 8 defeats for a win rate of 44.74%. While regularly rotating during qualifying with variations of 4-3-2-1, 3-4-2-1, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 they settled on a 3-4-2-1. Throughout this tournament they have averaged 11.5 shots per game, 46,6% of possession for a pass completion rate of 84.8% and 11 aerials won.

Key Players To Watch
Kobee Mainoo – England
England throughout this tournament despite reaching this stage have been a disjointed, dysfunctional mess with no coherent structure particularly stemming from midfield and by Southgate’s suggestion the lack of Kalvin Philips. Trent was trialled in midfield but proved wasteful, Gallagher provided energy but not much on the ball.
Mainoo was brought on for Gallagher against Slovenia and seemed to provide more balance to the team. It’s no surprise either considering the teenage sensation had already shown ability, maturity and composure beyond his years this last 12 months and already had experience helping to stabilise a dysfunctional midfield for his club.
Mainoo seemed to offer far more in his cameo and even if Southgate stumbled on the solution and despite their unimpressive showing against Slovakia he was arguably one of their better performers before being subbed off.
Granit Xhaka – Switzerland
The former Arsenal man might be 31, but there is plenty of life in him yet after coming off a brilliant season with Bayer Leverkusen a lot was expected of him. Xhaka can do it all as a midfielder with his 103.31 Passes Attempted, 12.07 Progressive Passes and 2.01 Progressive Carries in the 99th, 99th and 78th percentile for all midfielders.
Xhaka put in a Man of the Match display against Hungary before two solid showing against Scotland and Germany. Against the Italians he put in another strong performance and after an injury scare has been passed fit for this game.
England v Switzerland Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: England 2-0 Switzerland
In stereotypical English fashion (in recent tournaments anyway) despite being underwhelming in terms of performances, they find themselves two wins away from a final.
Switzerland shocked the Italians 2-0 in the Round of 16 and they shouldn’t be underestimated with the consistency of performances being put in led by the likes of Xhaka.
England have enough to see off Switzerland, but I’m not expecting them to make it easy for themselves (again).
