England v Spain Preview

England’s Form

England have been managed by Sarina Wiegman since 2021, with the highlight of her tenure being their victory in this competition in 2022. More recently, she guided them to a runners-up finish at the 2023 World Cup. They head into Sunday’s Final with a seasonal record in 2025 of 7 wins, 3 defeats and 2 draws.

Pre-Tournament, the Lionesses were second favourites for the tournament behind only Spain to retain their title from 2022.  They opened their campaign in less than ideal fashion, though losing 2-1 to France. In their next group games, though, they came alive, safely navigating their passage into the knockout stages following hammerings of the Netherlands 4-0 and Wales 6-1.

In their quarter-final tie against Sweden, the Lionesses staged a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down against Sweden with Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang scoring late to force extra time. The match went to a dramatic penalty shootout, where Hannah Hampton's saves and Bronze's decisive kick secured a 3-2 victory, advancing England to the semi-finals.

Ahead of their semi-final against they were comfortable favourites against Italy and though they came out the right end of the result, it wasn’t before a dramatic comeback. They trailed Italy 0-1 following a 33rd-minute goal from Barbara Bonansea. They looked to be heading out of the tournament before Michelle Agyemang equalised in the 96th minute, forcing extra time. Chloe Kelly sealed a 2-1 victory with a rebound penalty in the 119th minute, which meant England reached their third consecutive major final.

Spain’s Form

Spain headed into this tournament as the reigning World Cup Champions, though there has been a change in their management since that triumph, with Montse Tomé coming in following the departure of Jorge Vilda. Tomé had worked as an assistant coach during  Vilda’s tenure. Their dominance continued, though, and in 2025 their record is 11 wins and 1 defeat, though that loss did come 1-0 against England in the Nations League last February.

Heading into the tournament as the outright market leaders, it was always going to be interesting to see how they dealt with the expectancy. However, what followed has been a relatively routine exercise for this Spanish side, opening it with a comprehensive 5-0 victory against Portugal. That opening victory was then followed by a 6-2 win over Belgium, which confirmed their passage into the knockout stages, though they still ended the group with a 100% record after a 1-3 win over Italy.

In their quarter-final, Spain overcame a resilient Switzerland in the Women's Euro 2025 quarter-final, securing a 2-0 victory in Bern. Despite missing two penalties, second-half goals from Athenea del Castillo and Clàudia Pina’s stunning strike clinched Spain’s first Euros semi-final spot since 1997.

Spain entered their semi-final with Germany as favourites, and though they eventually came out the right side of the tie like their opponents, it took extra time to reach the final. Following a 0-0 scoreless draw at full-time, it wasn’t until an exceptionally clever 113th-minute near-post finish from Aitana Bonmatí that the German defensive rearguard was broken. Nevertheless, that strike was enough to bring them to their first Euro Final and a date with England in a 2023 World Cup final rematch.

Key Players To Watch

Alessia Russo – England

Arsenal Striker Russo (26) is one of the best around in the Women’s Game and is coming off a season where she scored 20 times in 41 appearances at club level. However, she offers a lot more than goals, a real physical presence who leads the line with power and exceptional link-up play.

For her nation, she has 24 goals in 56 games, and in this tournament has 1 Goal and 3 assists across her 5 Games. If you fancy her to make the difference for England in this game, she can be gotten at 10/1 to score first and can be gotten at 10/3 to score anytime.

Esther Gonzalez - Spain

The primary markswoman for Spain is veteran Gotham Striker Esther Gonzalez (32), who debuted for Spain in 2016 and has gone on to score 36 times for her country across 53 senior appearances, including 4 goals in 5 appearances at this tournament.

Esther is a versatile and physically strong striker known for her finishing, pressing, and ability to create space for herself and her teammates and looks like the most likely match-winner for Spain on Sunday. She is currently priced at 9/2 to score first and 13/8 to score anytime.

England v Spain Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: England 1-2 Spain

England are the reigning champions and have shown resiliency in abundance throughout this tournament to reach three consecutive finals from Euro 2022 to the 2023 World Cup and now Euro 2025.

Pre-Market favourites Spain have had a more routine run to the final, but their quality can’t be dismissed, having been runners-up at Euro 2022, to World Cup winners in 2023, this final in 2025, with a Nations League semi-final coming up in October too.

Both sides were brought to extra-time in their semi-finals, but Spain have had an easier run on the whole and with their depth of talent, I think they have the edge.
