England v Slovenia Preview
England’s Form
England dominantly qualified for Euro 2024 with 6 wins and 2 draws from their group with Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. That put them 6 clear of Italy and Ukraine following 22 goals scored and only 4 conceded.
Albeit it against strong opposition, England opened their 2024 in mixed fashion losing 0-1 against Brazil and drawing 2-2 against Belgium. The June window started more positively with a 3-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina but in their final warm-up appearance against Iceland, they lost 0-1. Since Euro 2024 commenced England have been putting in some sub-standard performances despite their 0-1 win over Serbia and 1-1 draw against Denmark which has meant that Southgate has received increasing criticism from the media for his overly negative approach, a step up in performance is needed sooner rather than later or they’ll be heading home.
Southgate was initially appointed on an interim basis in 2016 and has remained in the role since. However, despite some justifiable criticisms of his tenure England have become a more consistent force on the international stage under him coming 4th at the 2018 World Cup, Euro 2020 runners-up and most recently a Quarter-Final appearance at the 2022 World Cup. Following two lacklustre performances in the tournament Southgate will need to make some bold calls and face the music or he and his squad are destined to fail again.

Slovenia’s Form
Slovenia qualified for Euro 2024 as Group H runners-up following their identical group total of 22 points with Denmark losing out on head-to-head records. They’ll ironically get another crack off them in Germany this summer. They also scored one more than them in qualifying (20) and conceded one less (9).
Slovenia brought that form into 2024 and had a 0-1 victory over the USA in America in the middle of January. That was followed by a 2-2 draw against Malta at the beginning of the March window before a brilliant 2-0 win over an in-form Portuguese side. Ahead of Euro 2024, they had a 2-1 win against Armenia and a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria. Despite plenty expecting Slovenia to be cannon fodder at Euro 2024 they’ve been one of the tournament's surprise sides having gone unbeaten so far with a 1-1 draw against Denmark as well as Serbia.
Matjaž Kek has been in charge of Slovenia since 2018 and has a solid record of 27 wins, 18 draws and just 12 defeats for a win rate of 47.37%. That makes him the most successful manager in the country’s history. Slovenia are a throwback traditional side in their setup almost exclusively using some variation of a 4-4-2. Throughout this tournament, they have 11 shots per game, 35.6% possession, a pass success rate of 77.6% and 14.5 aerials won.

Key Players To Watch
Jude Bellingham – England
Bellingham (20) came into this tournament high in confidence following a brilliant season with Real Madrid scoring 24 times and assisting 13 goals across 44 games in all competitions. Plenty of English supporters were hoping he could be their Rooney at Euro 2024-type figure and drive them to some big results/performances.
He duly delivered in their opener against Serbia, being one of their better performers scoring the only goal from his sole shot he made 67/70 of his passes (96%) and made 4/4 long balls. However, in the Denmark game, he was a lot quieter and there will be a big expectation level on him to pick up his performance again for this game.
Jan Oblak – Slovenia
Slovenia may not be able to boost the most star-studded squad, but in Atlético Madrid Goalkeeper Oblak (31) they’ve one of the best keepers not only in the tournament but also in football full stop.
However, despite Slovenia’s surprise form, Oblak hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in the tournament with unconvincing displays against Denmark and Serbia. But for me, I think he is far too good for that form to continue, and the Slovenians will need a herculean effort from him in goal if they’re to stand a chance of getting a result in this match.
England v Slovenia Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: England 2-0 Slovenia
This is a huge game for England, they may have points on the board but due to the unconvincing nature of their performances, something needs to change, and the shackles have to be released by Southgate as they look for confidence before they must meet better sides in the knockout stages.
The Slovenians set themselves up well and deserve immense credit for not just their run of results during Euro 2024 but by extension the last two years it’s an example of a country making the most of their talents and player pool.
England should have enough to win, but I don’t think they have the ability under Southgate to put away Slovenia by more than a couple of goals given both side's current form
