England v Slovakia Preview
England’s Form
England dominantly qualified for Euro 2024 with 6 wins and 2 draws from their group with Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta. That put them 6 clear of Italy and Ukraine following 22 goals scored and only 4 conceded. Their pre-tournament form in 2024 was a mixed bag losing to Brazil 0-1 and having a 2-2 draw against Belgium. In their June warm-up fixtures, they beat Bosnia 3-0 and lost 0-1 against Iceland.
Throughout Euro 2024 England have been putting in sub-standard performances aplenty, struggling to a 0-1 win over Serbia and drawing 1-1 with Denmark. The media chatter continues to intensify and despite calls for Southgate to release the shackles and experiment against Slovenia, they put in another drab showing drawing 0-0 which ironically meant they won the group. But even with those drab performances, England have had the Southgate luck again being drawn on the “easier” side if they can pick up their performances they could still go deep in the competition.
Southgate was initially appointed on an interim basis in 2016 and has remained in the role since. However, despite some justifiable criticisms of his tenure England have become a more consistent force on the international stage under him coming 4th at the 2018 World Cup, Euro 2020 runners-up and most recently a Quarter-Final appearance at the 2022 World Cup.
England has flattered to deceive throughout the tournament, but it is do or die now in knockout football.

Slovakia’s Form
Slovakia qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runners-up in their qualifying group 8 behind Portugal following a record of 7 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats coming against Portugal, Luxembourg, Iceland, Liechtenstein Bosnia scoring 17 and conceding 8. They started their 2024 in poor fashion with a defeat 0-2 against Austria before drawing 1-1 with Norway. Although ahead of the tournament they had 4-0 victories over San Marino and Wales.
Slovakia shocked Belgium in their opening group game of the tournament 0-1 following a 7th minute goal courtesy of Schranz which ensured they would be in the qualifying picture when it came to the final group game. Schranz scored again against Ukraine this time in the 17th minute to send Slovakians into dreamland but following a late comeback by Ukraine they fell to a 1-2 defeat. They took the lead again against Romania and despite being penned back to 1-1 that would be enough for them to qualify for the knockout stages.
They’ve been managed by Italian Francesco Calzona since he was appointed on the 30th of August 2022 and has managed them to 10 wins with a win rate of 47.62%, 6 draws and only 5 defeats. He’s generally steadfast in setting his team up in a 4-3-3 formation but it is a well-drilled side that won’t be blown away by anyone no matter who the opposition is. Throughout the tournament, they averaged 12.3 shots per game, 51.2% possession, a pass percentage of 82.7% and 11.7 aerials won per game.

Key Players To Watch
Kobee Mainoo – England
If you watched this English side throughout the tournament what you’ve generally seen is a disjointed, dysfunctional mess with no coherent structure particularly stemming from midfield and by Southgate’s suggestion the lack of Kalvin Philips.
Against Serbia and Denmark the Trent “experiment” proved wasteful and inevitably he was and was taken off in both games. Southgate went for energy against Slovenia with Gallagher and while he did provide that he didn’t offer enough either and suffered the same fate with Mainoo replacing him.
Mainoo who despite being a teen, has shown ability, maturity and composure beyond his years this last 12 months and already has experience helping to stabilise a dysfunctional midfield for his club. Mainoo seemed to offer far more in his cameo and even if Southgate stumbled on the solution despite him he now has no choice but to pick Mainoo in my opinion.

Ivan Schranz – Slovakia
Ivan Schranz only had 3 goals before the tournament for Slovakia but following goals in 2/3 of the group games he now has 5 goals in his 24 caps for his country. The man who plays his club football for Slavia Prague is in brilliant form. He’s been efficient in scoring those goals with only 1.3 shots per game but has also been efficient on the ball completing 82% of his passes.

England v Slovakia Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: England 2-0 Slovakia
In stereotypical English fashion (in recent tournaments anyway) despite being underwhelming in terms of performances they have found themselves on the “easier” half of the draw. Say what you want about this team, but they do have quality and if Southgate can be daring in his selection decisions they could go very far in the tournament.
Slovakia shocked Belgium earlier in the tournament and their pre-tournament games against the likes of Portugal show they’re consistently competitive and will not give up chances easily which is not good for an English side struggling to create goal-scoring opportunities.
England have enough to see off Slovakia, but I’m not expecting them to make it easy for themselves
