England v Scotland Preview

England’s Form

England came third in the 2024 Six Nations Championship with a record of three wins and two defeats from their five matches. They narrowly overcame Italy and Wales in their opening two fixtures before losing a thriller 30-21 to Scotland. The highlight of their tournament was a dramatic 23-22 win over Ireland on St Patrick’s Day before they lost a 33-31 thriller to Scotland in their final game.

The second half of their 2024 is hard to gauge, as while they remained intensely competitive against Rugby’s “Elite” there were few victories to boast about. In the summer they defeated Japan before being beaten by 1 and 7 points respectively in their two games against New Zealand. They again played the All Blacks in the Autumn Series with a similar story losing out by 2 points in a 22-24 scoreline, they then lost 37-42 to Australia and 20-29 against South Africa before concluding the year with another victory over Japan this time 59-14.

The English opened their Six Nations with a tough fixture against reigning Champions Ireland at the Aviva Stadium. Despite putting in a resolute defensive showing against Ireland they would be beaten in the end 27-22 with two late tries making the scoreline a little more flattering to their attacking efforts.

England are historically always a different animal at Twickenham so it was always going to be interesting to see how they fared against the French in round two. We were not disappointed with an exceptional English showing and an 80 conversion from Fin Smith giving them a 26-25 win against France.

Scotland’s Form

Last year Scotland finished the 2024 Six Nations finishing fourth following a record of 2 wins and 3 defeats though one of those victories was a historic 30-21 Calcutta Cup win over England. The second half of their 2024 was largely positive though the quality of opposition was considerably lower with wins over Canada, the USA, Chile and Uruguay during the Summer Internationals.

The Autumn Series was also largely positive defeating Fiji 57-17 and though they lost 15-32 to South Africa in their remaining fixtures they had a 59-21 win over Portugal and a 27-13 win over Australia. It’s very hard to know what you’re going to get from this Scottish side in any given game.

Ahead of the Six Nations, plenty saw it as Scotland’s best opportunity to challenge for a Six Nations Championship in recent memory. In their opening fixture, they kept their early hopes alive with a 31-19 victory over Italy with the highlight being a hatrick from Glasgow centre Huw Jones.

Despite the first-round victory, in their second game, Ireland were a class above the Scots losing to an 18-32 scoreline. With Ireland having France to play a win in this fixture would keep them in Championship contention.

All-Time Head-To-Head Record

England and Scotland have played each other in rugby union since 1871. A total of 111 matches have been played, with England winning 76 times, Scotland 47 times and there’s been a staggering 19 draws.

2022: Scotland won 20-17 at Murrayfield

2020: England won 6-13 at Murrayfield

Trends

This has been an exceptional period for the Scots against England with five wins, one draw and only one defeat in their last seven games.

Key Players

Fin Smith – England

The Northampton Fly-Half (22) may have been born to two Scottish parents but ahead of this game he’s declared that his loyalties and dream was always to represent England after being born in Warwick and growing up in the area, He realised that senior dream in 2024 and has already been capped four times.

Fin Smith anytime tryscorer – 13/2

Fin was their star performer in their victory against France with his restarts and grubber kicks causing them serious issues. He assisted the game-winning try and scored the conversion to nudge England ahead in the 80th minute. He can be gotten at 6/1 to be Man of the Match again in this game.

Duhan Van Der Merwe – Scotland

The South African now Scottish International (29) has been nothing of a rip-roaring success since debuting for the Scotts in 2020 already amassing a total of 155 points from 45 tests with 30 tries making him the country's all-time try scorer.

Duhan van der Merwe anytime tryscorer – 8/5

During last season’s Six Nations, he was exceptional including a hat trick against England and despite being scoreless in the opening fixture against Italy, he did score a try against Ireland.

England v Scotland Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: England 26-12 Scotland

England have had a poor few years in the Six Nations but their win against France suggests the tide is turning for their fortunes.

Scotland have one win and one defeat in their opening two games, but a considerable improvement on their recent showing if they’re to make it five successive Calcutta Cup wins.

I like how this English side are progressing and I expect them to win this fixture.

Best Bet: England not to trail in the match @ 6/4

England not to trail in the match – 6/4
