England v Republic of Ireland Preview
England’s Form
The circus around who would replace Gareth Southgate as England Manager is over and the “Case for Carsley” has been closed with Tomas Tuchel set to take the reins in 2025. However, Carsley gets one last crack to complete the double over his former national team the Republic of Ireland on Sunday and heads into the game following a comfortable 0-3 win over Greece.
Carsley has generally switched between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1 throughout his tenure as interim head coach. The statistics look solid with 14.8 shots per game, an average of 69% of possession, a pass completion percentage of 90.5% and 10.2 aerials won. While there were several withdrawals before this period of games they still have an extremely strong squad to choose from.
England’s win over Greece means that another win on Sunday would mean they secure promotion to League A.

Republic of Ireland’s Form
Irish Football has very much been in the doldrums for the best part of a decade, but with every new managerial appointment there becomes a renewed sense of optimism “that this time might be different”. It was a difficult start to his tenure with two defeats 0-2 against England and Greece but in the last window their overall performances seemed to have improved and though the performance wasn’t there midweek against Finland, it doubled Heimir’s win tally and might just be the run of luck needed for a turning point.
Ireland very much rode their luck midweek against Finland, having fewer shots with 13 to their opponent's 14, only 43% of possession and surviving embarrassment with Kelleher pulling off a brilliant penalty save to ensure that Ferguson’s 45th-minute goal was not ruled out. It was a poor performance, but the type of luck this Irish team deserved after having no luck in the last 18 months.
This will be Heimir’s last window before the important March relegation playoff but with it against England, it’ll be interesting to see how much he dares experiment.

Key Players To Watch
Harry Kane – England
England’s record goalscorer missed the last window and his absence was very much felt with Carsley’s tactical alteration to not play with a genuine striker against Greece in the last International Window not working. However, in their reverse fixture against Greece he was started from the bench, I suspect he will be back in the starting side for this game though
Kane has 68 goals in 102 games for his country and if you fancy him to score he is 5/2 for first scorer and 3/4 to score anytime.
Evan Ferguson – Republic of Ireland
So much expectation and pressure is put on Evan Ferguson from Irish supporters that it shouldn’t be ignored that he’s still young having only turned 20 last month. He’s struggled with consistency and game time due to injuries but recently got his first Premier League goal of the season against Wolves which could be the catalyst for a return to form.
Ferguson made it 4 Senior International Goals when he scored against Finland midweek and he is 16/1 to score first and 6/1 to score anytime on Sunday.
England v Republic of Ireland Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: England 2-1 Republic of Ireland
England are an excellent side even when not at “full strength” as shown by their win over an in-form Greek outfit midweek the depth in their talent pool is something Ireland can only envy and no matter what 11 they put out on Sunday they will be justified favourites.
While the result might be a little beyond this Irish side at the moment, what the fans will clamour for is a proper performance which fans can get enthusiastic about for the future and not the gutless display they put on last time.
England should be far too good for the Republic of Ireland but I’m expecting the away side to put up more of a fight than they did in the reverse fixture.
Best Bet: England Win + Under 3.5 Goals @ 10/11
