England v New Zealand Preview

England’s Form

England have been in a mixed bag of form under Head Coach Steve Borthwick in 2024. Their Six Nations journey began with victories, albeit narrowly, coming 24-27 against Italy and 16-14 against Wales. That was followed by a 30-21 loss against Scotland but in their next game, they claimed a huge bragging rights win 23-22 over Ireland before concluding the competition with a 33-31 loss against France. They grew into the competition against the supposed stronger sides.

During the Summer Internationals, they commenced their second campaign of the International season with a convincing 17-52 victory over Japan in Tokyo. In their remaining games, they played out two competitive fixtures against New Zealand albeit coming out on the wrong side of the scoreline both times, 16-15 and 24-17. Both games took place in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s Form

Following their narrow World Cup Final defeat to South Africa 11-12 in October 2023 the All Backs did not return to the field until their Summer International against England. In both those games, as previously mentioned, they returned to winning ways with 16-15 and 24-17 victories. That was followed by a convincing 47-5 win over Fiji.

Their Rugby Championship defence commenced with a shock 30-38 loss against Argentina before they put the story right with a 42-10 win in their second game. However, they then came unstuck to the Springboks (albeit narrowly again) in 31-27 and 18-12 scorelines. In their final games in the Rugby Championship, they defeated Australia by 28-31 and 33-13 scorelines.

They commenced their Autumn Nations campaign with a 16-64 win over Japan last weekend.

England v New Zealand Rugby Head-To-Head

All-Time Head-To-Head Record

England and New Zealand have been playing against each other in Test Match Rugby since 1905 when the All Blacks ran out 0-15 winners in London on the 1906/06 New Zealand Tour.

From the 45 Test Matches between both sides, New Zealand have been victorious on 35 occasions and England have won 8 times. Only 2 draws have occurred.

New Zealand have scored a cumulative of 1,057 points compared to England’s 651

2018: New Zealand won 15-16 in Twickenham

Trends

New Zealand have won 8 of the last 10 tests between both sides with the last English victory coming in the 2019 Rugby World Cup Semi-Final which was held in Nissan Stadium, Japan.

Key Players

Marcus Smith – England

The magic man from Flyhalf England International Marcus Smith (25) oozes quality, class and flare in everything he does on the field. In his 21 caps for England since debuting in 2021 he has 231 points including a try in their most recent victory against Japan.

Ahead of this game, All Blacks great Justin Marshall has had high praise for the English flyhalf describing him as an “enigma” and that “he reminds me of Carlos Spence”. However. he also said that the All Blacks can ‘exploit’ England’s lack of ‘balance’

Will Jordan – New Zealand

Howlett, Savea, Lomu and many, many more are the greatest New Zealand try-scorers ever, but Speedster Will Jordan (26) is quickly putting himself in similar conversations amongst the rugby faithful since making his debut for the Kiwis in 2020 he has racked up an impressive tally of 175 points from 37 caps.

Jordan in 2024 has been consistently switched from #14 to #15 and back throughout the different games. However, he’s back at #15 on Saturday and I think he will flourish against the English defence.

England v New Zealand Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: England 10-20 New Zealand

English Rugby has gone through a period of transition, but in recent fixtures, they’ve shown themselves to be a capable side against the strongest of nations beating Ireland in the Six Nations and running France close before playing out competitive games against the All Blacks during the summer.

Though New Zealand lost the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final as well as relinquishing their Rugby Championship as well to the Springboks in the last 12 months they remain a force in International Rugby and are certainly no mugs.

This will be a close game but I think New Zealand will edge it for the third time in 2024.
