England v Italy Preview
England Form
English Rugby is undergoing a transitionary period but you get the sense that a side is starting to come together and they will be a very serious outfit come the 2026 Six Nations Championship. Last year in this event they finished third following three wins and two defeats with the highlight being a dramatic 23-22 win over Ireland on St Patrick’s Day. The remainder of the year saw them being competitive against the Rugby elite but few victories to boast about either last summer beating Japan and losing to the All Blacks twice by 1 and 7 points respectively.
During the Autumn Series, they lost to New Zealand again 22-24, 37-42 to Australia and 20-29 against South Africa before concluding the year with another victory over Japan this time 59-14. They opened their 2025 Six Nations campaign against Ireland putting in a resolute defensive performance before being beaten 27-22 though the scoreline likely flattered them.
England are always a different animal at Twickenham so their French test was always going to be interesting to follow. We were not disappointed with an exceptional English showing and an 80 conversion from Fin Smith giving them a 26-25 win against France. That was followed by a 16-15 Calcutta Cup victory which has kept them in Championship contention.
Italy Form
Italian Rugby has been on the rise in recent years with them becoming a far more competitive entity on the elite International Rugby scene and no longer the designated Six Nations “whipping team” especially following the appointment of former Stade Francais coach Gonzalo Quesada last year. At the 2024 Championship they only lost to England 24-27, beat Scotland 31-29, drew 13- 13 against France and beat Wales 21-24. Their only poor showing was a 36-0 defeat to Ireland in their opening game.
During the summer they lost to Samoa but beat Tonga and Japan to continue their strong form and in the Autumn Internationals despite an opening 18-50 loss to Argentina they recovered to beat Georgia 20-17 and only lost 11-29 against New Zealand.
In their opening Six Nations fixture of 2025, they fell to a 31-19 defeat against Scotland at Murrayfield. However, Italy were competitive and early in the second half were only 19-12 down before falling away toward the end of the game. They recovered in the next game for a 22-15 win over Wales but most recently were battered by the French in a 24-73 defeat.
All-Time Head-To-Head Record
England and Italy have played each other in rugby union since 1991. A total of 21 matches have been played, with England winning every single game.
Head-To-Head Results Last Five Matches

Trends
The latest game between these sides at last year's Championship was England’s narrowest winning margin against Italy.
Key Players
Fin Smith - England
The Northampton Fly-Half (22) may have been born to two Scottish parents but ahead of this game he’s declared that his loyalties and dream was always to represent England after being born in Warwick and growing up in the area, He realised that senior dream in 2024 and has already been capped four times.
Fin was their star performer in their victory against France with his restarts and grubber kicks causing them serious issues. He assisted the game-winning try and scored the conversion to nudge England ahead in the 80th minute. He continued his flying form against the Scots with a penalty-winning shot and a match-high of 16 tackles.
Tommaso Menoncello – Italy
Italy have become a more competitive force on the Tier 1 Rugby scene in recent seasons in large part to the emergence of many talented young rugby players. One of those players is Benetton Centre/Winger Tommaso Menoncello who despite being only 22 has already 35 points in his 26 Senior tests.
He is strong, fast with brilliant technique and his talents were awarded the Six Nations Player of the Tournament in 2024 becoming the youngest player to do so at 21. That form continued into their opening game against the Scots where he was constantly breaking the Scottish tackles and Scottish defensive line. He’s been quieter in recent games putting in solid albeit unremarkable showing against Wales and France but remains the player to watch for Italy.
England v Italy Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: England 20-12 Italy
While not the most potent attacking force (only Wales have scored fewer points than them 64 to 33) they seem to be more robust defensively and are certainly a team on the rise.
While Italy have not been as impressive as their 2024 tournament they will take great heart from their showing last year against England.
England will have enough, but I can’t see this being a high-scoring game.
