We have an England v Haiti prediction and preview plus betting odds for you ahead of the Lionesses World Cup opening game.
When? 10.30 am, Saturday the 22nd of July
What Channel? RTÉ 2 and UTV
Haiti - 50/1
The Draw - 22/1
The oddsmakers make England unprecedented 1/500 favourites, Haiti are 50/1 while the draw is 22/1.
They qualified for the World Cup by winning UEFA Group D. In that group they were dominant as they won ten from ten matches, scoring eighty goals and conceding none.
Sarina Wiegman has held the position of England head coach since September 2021, following 15 years of experience, most notably with the Netherlands. Sarina has already become the most successful England Women's coach ever from thirty-two matches, having twenty-five wins, six draws and only one defeat (from official matches) with the highlight being their recent Euro 2022 success.
In 2023 their form has been decent too (albeit against weaker opposition) with four wins and two defeats. One should also note their final game in 2022 against Portugal where they lost 5-0 which would be a better reflection of where they are as a team.
Nicolas Delépine has been in charge of the nation since 2022 following experience at club level in France. He has already guided the team to a historic debut and anything else at this tournament would be a bonus.

Head Coach Sarina Wiegman has transitioned the English Team from the 4-2-3-1 she favoured for their Euro 2022 success to now more often than not playing the team in a 4-3-3 formation. This is largely due to a reshuffling of the pack after the injury to their star-attacking midfielder Fran Kirby.
While this Haiit came could be employed as an opportunity for tactical experimentation and/or rotation with tougher later fixtures in mind. I’d expect Sarina to start with what she perceives as her strongest 11 in the opening game with key players taken off early when the game is secured.
Manchester United keeper Mary Earps will be the English Number (1) and she will be supported by Bronze and Greenwood in the full-back positions and Morgan with Carter as the CBs.
In midfield all-action World Class Stanway (24) will likely be on the right-hand side, her 66.59 Passes Attempted P/90 in the 98th percentile, 1.63 Successful Take Ons P/90 in the 96th percentile and 3.5 Tackles P/90 in the 90th percentile but expect here to play a more creative role. Walsh will partner her in the centre and will be more defensive with the elegant Toone the least defensive of the three.
The front three is the area which will be most up for debate with either Daly or Russo down the centre, I’d expect the former to get the nod in this one but their minutes could be evenly distributed throughout the tournament. James will likely play as the RW although Russo could be an option there too with both Russo and Daly pictured training on the same side (despite Sarina suggesting it will be one or the other) Hemp will likely be the LW.
“That’s how you get players to play to their potential: when you go out looking for the positive points but especially when you learn to get to know each other. We didn’t want to impose things but to build together.”
In their last five matches, they have fielded five different formations which shows they’re tactically flexible. However, one thing that worries me about this Haitian side is the age profile and in-experience with six teenagers and ten in the squad 20 or younger.
Haiti does have some prolific strikers, with Roselord Borgella (30) having 20 goals in 25 games, Batcheba Louis (26) having 23 goals in 16 games, and Captain Nérilia Mondésir (24) has 18 goals in 12 games.
This will be the first time England and Haiti's women's teams have faced each other in a competitive fixture.
Euro 2022 Champions England are one of the tournament favourites for a reason, with quality and pedigree throughout their team. They face World Cup debutants Haiti who stand very little chance of getting a result in this one and will be looking to keep the score down first and foremost.
In some quarters people are dismissing England a little (despite their tags as second favourites) following their recent defeat to Australia and a loss of some star names through retirement and injuries. However, I am expecting a cricket score in this one with The Lionesses starting the tournament sharply so don’t be surprised if the score reaches double-digits.

The Form - England vs Haiti
England’s Form
England are currently ranked 4th in the world, and in 2023 they have been in mediocre form (for their standards) with three wins, three draws (one against Brazil, which they'd go on to win on penalties) and one defeat against Australia 0-2. The Lionesses are scoreless in their last three matches also. They qualified for the World Cup by winning UEFA Group D. In that group they were dominant as they won ten from ten matches, scoring eighty goals and conceding none.

Haiti’s Form
World Cup debutants Haiti qualified for the tournament through the Inter-confederation play-off Group B where they overcame Senegal 0-4 in the Semi-Final and Chile 1-2 in the Final to complete a historic achievement for the nation. In 2023 their form has been decent too (albeit against weaker opposition) with four wins and two defeats. One should also note their final game in 2022 against Portugal where they lost 5-0 which would be a better reflection of where they are as a team.

England vs Haiti Preview
England’s Tactics
England will enter their first Group Stage game of the 2022 World Cup as heavy favourites, and you can expect them to have the majority of possession in this match. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is close to 70%.Head Coach Sarina Wiegman has transitioned the English Team from the 4-2-3-1 she favoured for their Euro 2022 success to now more often than not playing the team in a 4-3-3 formation. This is largely due to a reshuffling of the pack after the injury to their star-attacking midfielder Fran Kirby.

Haiti Tactics
Haiti will have very little of the ball in this match and so are likely to set themselves up in low-block against England as they try and restrict England’s space and frustrate the English. When Nicolas Delépine took over in February 2022 he said “We had to get to know the players first, find out what drives them, their strengths and their culture, so we could get the best out of them,”“That’s how you get players to play to their potential: when you go out looking for the positive points but especially when you learn to get to know each other. We didn’t want to impose things but to build together.”
