England v France Preview

England Form

England came third in the 2024 Six Nations Championship with a record of three wins and two defeats from their five matches. They narrowly overcame Italy and Wales in their opening two fixtures before losing a thriller 30-21 to Scotland. The highlight of their tournament was a dramatic 23-22 win over Ireland on St Patrick’s Day before they lost a 33-31 thriller to France in their final game.

The second half of their 2024 is hard to gauge, as while they remained intensely competitive against Rugby’s “Elite” there were few victories to boast about. In the summer they defeated Japan before being beaten by 1 and 7 points respectively in their two games against New Zealand. They again played the All Blacks in the Autumn Series with a similar story losing out by 2 points in a 22-24 scoreline, they then lost 37-42 to Australia and 20-29 against South Africa before concluding the year with another victory over Japan this time 59-14.

The English opened their Six Nations with a tough fixture against reigning Champions Ireland at the Aviva Stadium. Despite putting in a resolute defensive showing against Ireland they would be beaten in the end 27-22 with two late tries making the scoreline a little more flattering to their attacking efforts.

France Form

France finished second in the 2024 Six Nations Championship coming 5 points behind winners Ireland, but it was a tournament of two halves. They opened it with a convincing loss at the hands of Ireland, a narrow win over Scotland and a shock draw with Italy. They then defeated Wales convincingly and won a thriller with England in their closing games to finish on a high.

Following the Six Nations, France played out a drawn series with Argentina and defeated Uruguay last summer. The Autumn Nations Series saw them perform brilliantly to close out the season with a 52-12 win over Japan, a 30-29 thriller against New Zealand and a 37-23 win over Argentina.

In their opening Six Nations game against Wales, they put in a dominant showing winning 43-0 which was France’s second biggest win against Wales after a 51-0 victory during the 1998 Five Nations. The ruthless nature of their performance even if against an out-of-sorts Welsh side will be a positive sign for their Six Nations Championship credentials.

Head Coach Galthié since his appointment in 2019 has achieved the remarkable feat of making the unpredictable French, predictable in a positive sense with a win rate of 77.78% I’m expecting his experience to be the ace in the pack for France this Six Nations Championship.

Key Players

Marcus Smith – England

The magic man from Flyhalf England International Marcus Smith (25) oozes quality, class and flare in everything he does on the field. In his 40 caps for England since debuting in 2021 he has 291. Points.

Marcus Smith anytime try – 10/3

Bet Here

Despite England’s defeat last weekend Smith was one of their better performers despite scoring a yellow card in the first half, he played well when on the field. His teammates were just unable to provide him with the platform to profit from his creativity in the second half.

Antoine Dupont – France

Antoine Dupont (28), France and Toulouse Captain and Scrum-Half, is the best in his position in the World and consistently shows himself to be excellent defensively with freakish strength for his size. Expect everything to go through him at the weekend and he will be the driving force behind everything good about France.

Antoine Dupont anytime try – 6/4

In their opening demolition of Wales, Dupont was superb becoming the first to provide a hat-trick of try assists in two separate Men’s Six Nations matches (also 4 vs Italy in 2021). Arguably the best player in the game at the moment.

England v France Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: England 9-25 France

While not quite the force they once were, the signs are there that England’s return to the pinnacle of the Six Nations stage could only be a matter of a Championship or so away.

France showed no mercy on the opening night leaving Wales scoreless, this presents a different challenge but their recent record against England suggests that they will have more than enough to win.

Both sides played out a thriller last year but I’m unsure if we will get a high-scoring affair on this occasion.
