England v Denmark Odds - Women's World Cup 2023

The Form - England vs Denmark

England’s Form

England are ranked 4th in the world and entered the tournament in mediocre form for their standards with three wins, three draws (after the draw with Brazil, they beat them on penalties) and one defeat against Australia 0-2 and were scoreless in their last three games coming into the tournament.

The Lionesses qualified for the World Cup by UEFA Group D, winning ten from ten matches, scoring eighty goals and conceding none.

Sarina Wiegman has held the position of England head coach since September 2021, following 15 years of experience, most notably with the Netherlands. Sarina has already become the most successful England Women's coach ever from thirty-three matches, having twenty-six wins, six draws and only one defeat (from official matches) with the highlight being their recent Euro 2022 success.

England were expected by many (including myself) to rack up a cricket score in their first game of the tournament against Haiti. However, despite having 75% of the possession, 21 shots and 3 big chances their only goal came from a Georgia Stanway 29th-minute penalty in a lacklustre performance in front of goal in a 1-0 win.

Denmark’s Form

Denmark qualified for the World Cup by winning their UEFA Group E qualifying group which included Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Azerbaijan and Malta winning eight out of eight matches scoring eight goals and only conceding two.

The Danes came into this competition in strong form with four wins and two defeats. They opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win against China.

Lars Søndergaard has been in charge of Denmark since 2017, a role which he took after a 20+ year coaching career and this is his first job in international coaching. Denmark are making their fifth finals appearance and will be looking to better their -ever appearances, which was in a quarter-final in 1991 and 1995.

England vs Denmark Preview

England’s Tactics

In the previous prediction, we suggested that England would have close to 70% of possession against Haiti and my prediction was vindicated with a total of 75% in their first game of the group. In this match, I’d expect them to still have the majority of the ball but against the better Danes, it may only be closer to around the 55%+.

Head Coach Sarina Wiegman continued with the transition we expected in their opening Group match playing with a 4-3-3 against Haiti and that should continue again against Denmark due to the absence of Fran Kirby from the squad through injury.

My prediction for the back-five for their opener was proven correct and I’d expect that to continue with Mary Earps in the net supported by Bronze and Greenwood in the full-back positions and Morgan with Carter as the CBs.

In our prediction, last time we earmarked “World Class” Stanway (24) as a player to watch against Haiti and she proved the match-winner with her 29th-minute penalty.  But not just the goal Stanway put in the World Class performance we expected completing 56/67 passes, creating four chances and making fourteen ball recoveries. She was partnered by Walsh in the centre of the three and Toone on the left-hand side and I expect that trio to continue again.

The front three was the area, where the most debate was about before the match with Sarina giving Russo the nod over Daly with Kelly on the right and Hemp on the left. Kelly had a good game against Haiti, and she should probably start again,  I’d expect Hemp to make way though after a poor first game and I think Daly might come in on the left-hand side.

Denmark’s Tactics

Denmark set themselves up in a 4-3-3 formation in their opening game against China and I’d expect them to continue with something more of the same against England.  In their 1-0 win they had 56% of possession scoring once from thirteen shots against China’s nine shots. I’d expect them to have less of the ball against England which could see them employ a more counter-attacking system.

The Danes will battle hard shown by their three outstanding performers from their first game were Veje at left-back who had 108 touches, 49/69 accurate passes and 5/7 Ground duels and 2/2 aerial duels won. Hasbo in central put in a solid defensive display also with 5/5 tackles won, 2 interceptions and 13 ball recoveries. Hoolmgaard who had 2/2 successful dribbles, 9/12 Grund duels won an5/7 aerial duels won

England vs Denmark Prediction

Prediction: England 2-0 Denmark

In their opening game against Haiti, I (like many) expected England to lay down a marker for the tournament and put a cricket score past  Haiti. However,  that was not the case and only a Georgia Stanway penalty was the difference between both the sides at the end of the ninety minutes.

England certainly, won’t be putting up a cricket score against Denmark for a side which averages only 0.71 goals conceded per match in 2023. At the same time, if they did it would certainly be the statement of intent and the kick-start to their World Cup campaign again. They will win this one but it won’t be by a lot of goals.

Best Bet: Alessia Russo First Goalscorer @ 4/1
