The Form - Dublin v Roscommon

Dublin’s Form

Dublin bounced back following their relegation from Division 1 last season by winning six of their seven league matches to earn promotion straight back to Division 1 for the 2024 season and earn a place in the Division 2 Final in the process.

The Dubs dispatched Louth, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Clare and Limerick along the way during their league campaign with arguably their most impressive success coming in Round 6 with their 2-19 to  2-11 win away to Meath.

They went on to obliterate a fancied Derry side in the second half of that league final to make amends for the earlier defeat to the Oak Leaf County in the round robin stage of the competition.

Throughout Division 2 Dublin were the second-highest scorer with 125 points scoring an average of 17.85 points per match, only Cork has scored more with 137. Dublin also had the second-best defence in the competition with only 95 points conceded which is 13.57 points per match, Derry had the best defence with 69 points conceded.

Dublin commenced their Leinster Championship Campaign by demolishing  Laois in a 2-09 to 4-30 scoreline in the Quarter-Final in typical Dublin fashion. They overcame a scare in the Semi-Final against Kildare winning in a 0-12 to 0-14 score before going on to beat Louth in the Leinster Final in a comprehensive 0-15 to 5-21 scoreline.

In the All-Ireland Series they were drawn against Kildare, Sligo and Roscommon and face the Rossies in their first game of the series at the weekend. Dublin now find themselves as the All-Ireland favourites despite playing their football in Division 2 this season.

Roscommon’s Form

Roscommon had a decent league campaign in Division 1 finishing in third place, only two points behind both their Connacht rivals Mayo and Galway who contested the National League Final.

In the league, their four victories came against Tyrone, Galway, Armagh and Donegal with their three defeats coming against Monaghan, Mayo and Kerry.

In Division 1 Roscommon were the fourth-lowest scorers with 105-points an average of 15 points per match only Galway (93), Armagh (96) and Donegal (76) scored less. However, they had the second-best defence with only 92 points conceded an average of 13.14 points per match.

Roscommon commenced their Connacht Championship Campaign with an impressive 2-08-to-0–10-point victory against Mayo in Castlebar. They played Galway in the Semi-Final but couldn't replicate their league success against The Tribesemen earlier in the spring and were beaten relatively handily 1-09 to 1-13 by Galway.

In the All-Ireland Series, they have been drawn against Kildare, Sligo and Dublin and face the Dubs in their first game of the series at the weekend in Croke Park.

Dublin v Roscommon Preview From Diarmuid Connolly

Dublin certainly can't slip up here. If they lose to Roscommon, we can all see them beating Sligo, but it’ll not be easy having to go to Nowlan Park to play a Kildare team who got change from Croke Park, with only two points between them in the Leinster semi-final.

Not getting a win in your first day out, just like Kerry, can put you right on the back foot. So Dublin need to go out and make a big statement. This is the first Division One side Dublin are going to play all year and I think people are sleeping in on Roscommon.

They had a great league, they beat a lot of top teams, they beat Mayo in the Championship and they only lost narrowly to Galway - and we know  how good Galway are going at the minute.

Roscommon have sharp-shooters inside too, Conor Cox, the two Murtaghs and Enda Smith driving the forward.

Croke Park will suit Dublin, but I wouldn't be sleeping in on this Roscommon side at all. It’s a huge game for Dublin - they'll have to start off really well and put their front foot forward and they'll have to get their matchups right at the back.

We all know they will score going forward, but it's how they solidify at the back and how they match up in midfield against Enda Smith. If you let him play football, he'll dictate play for Roscommon. I think it's going to be a very tight game.

Key Players To Watch

Con O’Callaghan

Arguably the most talented GAA player in the country, a capable hurler and footballer, the Football Team are very lucky to have Con in their panel who has been a serial scorer since joining the group in 2016.

In the Leinster Final against Louth, he hit 0-04 to continue his fine scoring form and you’d be foolish if you didn’t expect him to hit at least the same total against Roscommon.

Diarmuid Murtagh

The St Faithleachs man usually lines out as right corner forward for the Rossies and during their Division 1 League Campaign he was Roscommon’s highest scorer and the fifth highest in the competition with a total of 1-18 for an average of 3 points per match.

In their Connacht Quarter-Final win against Mayo he scored 0-06 but in their Semi-Final defeat to Galway, he failed to register any score. If they’re to shock Dublin at the weekend he will need to return to the scoresheet.

Dublin v Roscommon Betting Odds

The odds makers make Dublin heavy favourites as we get closer to Sunday's big game! They can be currently gotten at 1/8.

The handicap for the game is Dublin -6 at 5/6.

Dublin v Roscommon Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Dublin 1-20 Roscommon 0-15

Dublin comes into this match as huge favourites following their demolition job in the Leinster Final against Louth where they won by a mammoth 21-points in a 0-15 to 5-21 scoreline and so will fancy their chances to start their All-Ireland Series campaign in a similar vein come the weekend.

Roscommon have been consistently competitive this season across all their games in Division 1 this year and even defeated Mayo in the first round of the Connacht Championship before being knocked out by Galway so they will fancy their chances of putting in a competitive performance again.

Dublin recovered emphatically from their Kildare scare to make light work of Louth last time out, it may not be as easy for The Dubs on this occasion, but they should still have far too much for Roscommon.

Best Bet: Winning Margin Dublin 7-9 @ 3/1
