Dublin v Cork Preview
Dublin’s Form
Dublin last season finished 4th from 6 teams in Division 1 Group B following a record of 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats. When it came to the Leinster Championship they finished with an identical record to their league form to advance to the All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-Finals where they would defeat Carlow by a 0-21 to 2-25 scoreline. They were knocked out in the Quarter-Final then by Clare 5-26 to 2-17.
This season has been a similar story (nearly identical to last season so far) again finishing 4th in Division 1 Group B this time with a record of 2 wins and 3 defeats. However, their Leinster Championship performance was even stronger than last year with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss meaning they finished only 1 point behind Kilkenny and qualified for the Leinster Final. In the Leinster Final, they were convincingly beaten by “The Cats” though 3-28 to 1-18.
Dublin in the Group Stage of the Leinster Championship went close to Kilkenny in a 2-23 to 1-28 loss, if they can replicate similar they will be a dangerous prospect for Cork to play.
Cork’s Form
2023 started impressively for Cork when they topped Division 1 Group A with a record of 4 wins and 1 draw to finish 1 point ahead of runner-up in the league phase Limerick. Cork would come unstuck in the League Semi-Final losing to Kilkenny by a 0-22 to 2-22 scoreline. However, despite the initial promise their season ended on a whimper following a 4th finish in Munster following a record of 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses.
Cork commenced the 2024 season in solid fashion but not quite the heights of the previous season when their record of 3 wins and 2 defeats meant they finished below Clare and Kilkenny in the league. In their Munster Campaign, a slow start (2 defeats) was followed by 2 wins against Limerick and Tipperary which meant they secured their passage to the Preliminary Quarter-Final albeit by the skin of their teeth. In the Preliminary Quarter-Final, they showed their class making light work of Offaly in a 2-19 to 4-25 victory.
Dublin v Cork Rivalry
Both counties first played each other in hurling back in 1895 when Cork ran out 5-20 to 2-0 winners. Since that game, they’ve played irregularly due to both counties playing in different provincial championships.
In Championship Hurling they have faced off on 17 occasions with Cork winning 14 times, Dublin winning twice and 1 draw taking place.

Dublin v Cork: Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Dublin 1-16 Cork 2-20
Dublin head into this as major underdogs, but have shown in their early season league tussle against Kilkenny that on their day they can challenge most teams in the country. Although their Leinster Final defeat against the same opposition would suggest to me that maybe Dublin had peaked far earlier in the season and that’s why the result was so close in the league.
You can never be quite sure what you get with Cork Hurling their opening game collapses in Munster losing to Waterford and Clare put them in serious jeopardy of not making it out of Munster for the second successive season. However, brilliant victories over Limerick and Tipperary then came followed by a routine win over Offaly to land them into this Quarter-Final.
Cork should be too good for Dublin, provided they don’t get complacent.
