Dortmund v Atlético Madrid Preview
Dortmund’s Form
Despite Dortmund’s recent good form with 12 points from their last 5 league games, they’re only 5th in their domestic division level with RB Leipzig in 4th but 7 points off Stuttgart in 3rd. Their Champions League form has been a lot more positive though initially topping the “Group of Death” with 11 points coming ahead of PSG, Milan and Newcastle. They then overcame PSV in the Round of 16 winning 3-1 on aggregate.
In their Quarter Final first leg, Dortmund dominated the ball with 67%, but they were unable to create any meaningful chances with their 12-shot total only accumulating an XG of 0.87. However, Haller’s 81st-minute goal gives them a real chance of overcoming the deficit with a second-leg performance.
Dortmund at the weekend had a 1-2 win over Mönchengladbach following Sabitzer’s double and head into this game full of confidence.
Of course, they go into the 2nd leg of this tie against Dortmund with a 2-1 aggregate advantage after their victory at home in El Metropolitano. In the end, they may feel relieved to have gotten away with the win considering that the German visitors hit the crossbar twice in the closing minutes although they’ll also be aware that they had the chances to put the tie to bed but failed to take advantage.

Atlético Madrid’s Form
Diego Simeone’s side have had a season of ups and downs to this point. In La Liga, they are way off the pace in the title race, 17 points behind arch-rivals Real Madrid.
In domestic cup competitions, they failed to deliver silverware after losing 5-3 to Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de Espana. More recently they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey against Athletic Club in the semi-final when they were beaten 4-0 on aggregate.
Most recently we saw Atleti at the weekend in a big game against 3rd place Girona. In that game, they came back from an early goal to win 3-1 which puts them in the driving seat to secure Champions League football for next season.

Key Players To Watch
Nico Schlotterbeck – Dortmund
Since signing from Freiburg for a reported €25 million transfer fee back in May 2022 he has been an impressive defensive force at the back after playing a bit part role in his first season he has been a regular for the last two. His defensive aptitude. tackling and passing will be crucial cause if Dortmund concede early they will be up against it considering it’s a Simeone side.
Antoine Griezmann – Atlético Madrid
A player who is ageing like a fine Spanish Wine, Griezmann (33) has 21 goals and 8 assists from 41 matches in all competitions this season including a brace against Girona at the weekend he was also MOTM in the first leg.
However, he offers much more than goal contributions, with his work ethic and defensive contribution paramount to his team too averaging 1.12 Tackles (87th percentile), 0.54 Interceptions (94th percentile) and 0.95 Blocks (86th percentile) for all forwards
Dortmund v Atlético Madrid Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Dortmund 1-1 Atlético Madrid
Dortmund have overcome the odds throughout the Champions League, specifically their original “Group of Death” and they will have to overcome the deficit if they’re to get to the Semi-Final stage.
Atlético are in great form and with Simeone in the dugout they’ve just the man to know how to set up a side to get a result and if they avoid a defeat they’re through.
Dortmund are favourites, but I think Atlético are a value bet.
Best Bet: Under 2.5 Goals and Atlético Win @6/1
