We have a Derry v Westmeath prediction along with the betting odds for you ahead of this weekend's All-Ireland Series match.
This is a de facto knockout game as both teams are stuck on 0 points heading into this one with the other two sides in the group, Armagh and Galway, on 4 points heading into this final round of fixtures.
Derry, Division 1 League Champions and a team that was hotly fancied to contend for the Sam Maguire heading into this Championship, need a win to keep their All-Ireland hopes alive.
A draw would do for Westmeath as it would send them through to a Preliminary All-Ireland Quarter-Final.
So can a struggling Derry squad return to their previous form or will Westmeath upset the odds and qualify from the ‘group of death’? Find our prediction below.

Derry v Westmeath Preview
Derry’s Form
Derry had a disappointing 2023 season, finishing 4th in Division 1 with 4 victories and 3 defeats. They were then eliminated in the Ulster Football Championship at the first hurdle losing 1-18 to 2-17 against Monaghan in the Quarter-Finals, following the All-Ireland Series they were again knocked out at the Quarter-Final stage this time against Kerry in a 2-17 to 0-12 scoreline.
It has not been much better for Derry in 2024 finishing even lower in Division 1 this season in 5th place following a record of three victories and four defeats. In the Ulster Championship, they went one better though with a Quarter-Final 3-16 to 1-23 win over Cavan to reach the Semi-Final where they were beaten by eventual winners Donegal 0-18 to 0-16.
Following that mixed form it was difficult to predict how they would perform in the All-Ireland Series and in Round 1 they were duly dispatched by Donegal (again) this time by a far more convincing score of 0-21 to 0-14. However, they kicked back into gear in their recent Round 2 victory against Clare in a 3-15 to 0-10 scoreline.
It’s very difficult to know what to expect from this Derry side.
Westmeath’s Form
Ahead of this season in 2023, Westmeath had finished an average 4th in Division 2 with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats. It didn’t get much better for the Rebels when they were shockingly eliminated at the first hurdle in the Munster Football Championship Quarter-Final in a 0-13 to 0-14 defeat against Clare.
However, they fared stronger in the All-Ireland Series coming second in their group behind Kerry but ahead of Mayo and Louth. They would then defeat Roscommon in their preliminary Quarter-Final 1-14 to 0-16 before they came unstuck against Derry 1-12 to 1-08 at the proper Quarter stage.
2024 has been a similar yet slightly more positive story for Westmeath starting their season with another 4th finish with an identical record to last season. The Munster Championship was more positive with a 3-13 to 0-11 win over Limerick in the Quarter-Final before being beaten by eventual winners Kerry in the Semi-Final 0-18 to 1-12. The All-Ireland Series has seen them go from strength to strength again though following a 1-11 to 1-13 win over Clare and a 3-09 to 0-16 win against Donegal.
Westmeath have shocked many with their performance against Donegal but need to avoid defeat at the weekend if they want to immediately advance to the Quarter-Final.

Derry v Westmeath Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Derry 0-16 Westmeath 2-10
A lot more was expected of this Derry side before the season started but despite running Donegal close in the Ulster Championship Semi-Final there has been very little consistency in their performances.
Westmeath are riding the wave high in confidence and know that if they can avoid defeat in this game they will be straight into the All-Ireland Quarter-Final for the second successive season and avoiding a preliminary game.
For me, this is going to be a far closer game than the odds suggest it will be and I think the draw at 7/1 could be a great bet.
