Derry v Dublin Preview

Derry’s Form

Derry has been excellent throughout their 2023 League Campaign. They have not lost a single game having won six straight games dispatching Limerick, Louth, Meath, Kildare, Dublin and Clare in their opening six weeks of the league season.

That consistency was enough to secure their League Final place and promotion to Division 1 for 2024.

The only blot in their form book was a Round 7 draw against Cork 1-14 – 1-14 Derry which was enough to secure a top-of-the-league position in 2023 coming ahead of their opponents Dublin in second place.

Derry has the third-best attack in the league with 120 points scored which is an average of 17.14 points per match, only Dublin (125) and Cork (137) have more. Derry’s most impressive stat is their mean defence with only 69 points conceded which is only an average of 9.85 points per match and 26 points better than the next-best defence Dublin.

Derry will know that a win on Sunday would be good enough to bring them their first league title since 2008.

Dublin’s Form

Dublin has bounced back following their relegation from Division 1 last season winning six of their seven league matches to earn promotion straight back to Division 1 for the 2024 season and earning a place in the Division 2 Final in the process.

They dispatched Louth, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Clare and Limerick along the way with arguably their most impressive success coming in Round 6 with their 2-19 to 2-11 win away to Meath. Throughout Division 2 Dublin are the second-highest scorer with 125 points scoring an average of 17.85 points per match, only Cork has scored more with 137.

Dublin has also the second-best defence in the competition with only 95 points conceded which is 13.57 points per match, as mentioned earlier Derry has the best defence with 69 points conceded.

Dublin is without a league or All-Ireland since their All-Ireland Football Championship win in 2020, while it would be a stretch to call that a drought, for a county which has been so successful in recent history that is exactly what it feels like! Dublin will want to return to winning ways by winning this League Final on Sunday and getting another national title, albeit in the second tier of football.

Key Players To Watch

Conor Glass

Since returning from the AFL in 2020, the midfielder has been credited as the primary influence in helping to turn Derry from an afterthought to serious Ulster and All-Ireland contenders.

There are not many compliments, if any, greater that you could give a footballer but that is exactly what is being said about the 25-year-old who recently assumed the captaincy of his county.

2022 was a great year for Glass, Ulster Champion with Derry, Derry County Champion with Glen, Ulster Club Champion and an All-Star Award. If he is at his best on Sunday then there is every chance that he could add a league title to that honour roll!

Con O’Callaghan

Arguably the most talented GAA player in the country, a capable hurler and footballer, the Dublin football team are very lucky to have Con on their panel. O'Callaghan has scored a staggering 12-71 since joining the group in 2016.

His goal-scoring threat is in a league of its own and if he can get one at the weekend that could be the winning of the League Final. He is currently 6/1 to be the first goal-scorer on Sunday.

Dublin v Derry Betting Odds

The odds makers make Dublin favourites as we get closer to Sunday's big game! They can be currently gotten at 8/13.

We spoke to our gaelic football ambassador Diarmuid Connolly earlier in the week who disagrees with our odds makers as he believes that Derry should be favourites going into this game.

Derry, despite unbeaten status in the league including a 1-11-to-0–13-point victory over Dublin, enters the match as underdogs currently being priced at 7/4.

The handicap for the game is Dublin -2 at 5/4.

Derry v Dublin Betting Odds for Division Two League Final

Dublin v Derry Prediction & Best Bet

Dublin comes into this match as favourites despite their one-point defeat to Derry in the earlier rounds of Division 2. The difference maker could be the Croke Park factor with Dublin essentially playing a home match on Sunday. There’s talent and experience across the panel and the shock return of Stephen Cluxton to the squad adds to that even further.

Derry has hardly put a foot wrong in the league, their only blot was a draw in their final fixture v Cork when they had already qualified for the League Final. Conor Glass has been instrumental to the progress of this Derry side and will need to be on form on Sunday if they’re to beat Dublin.

Dublin is facing more criticism than they have in a long time with Lee Keegan saying “they look vulnerable” and Joe Brolly saying “the fire is gone and they don’t seem to care” all comments made about them in recent weeks.

Derry’s time could be now and with their impenetrable defence, I think Derry will pull off a shock win.

Prediction: Derry 0-15 Dublin 0-12

Best Bet: Derry To Win Both Halves 5/1
