Crystal Palace v Man City Preview

Crystal Palace’s Form

Since the arrival of Oliver Glasner to Selhurst Park on the 19th of February last year, Palace have seemingly been on an upward trajectory as a club, finishing 10th last year in the Premier League and currently 12th with two games remaining. It’s in the cup competitions where they truly have excelled, reaching the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup earlier in the season and now have an FA Cup final to look forward to this weekend.

Ahead of this final, Palace travelled to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium last Sunday, where they ran out comfortable 0-2 winners over the North London outfit to make it five games unbeaten in all competitions. They were dominant too, effectively trebling their opponents' shot total 8 vs 23 as well as having more shots on target, possession, passes and corners.

Route To The Final

Third Round – Crystal Palace 1-0 Stockport County

Fourth Round –Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Crystal Palace

Fifth Round –Crystal Palace 3-1 Millwall

Quarter-Final- Fulham 0-3 Crystal Palace

Semi-Final- Crystal Palace 3-0 Aston Villa

Crystal Palace have the opportunity to win the first major trophy in the club's history this weekend and go one better than their runner-up finishes in 1990 and 2016.

Man City’s Form

For a side which has been so dominant for the best part of a decade, especially since Guardiola was appointed in 2016, this has been a poor season by all accounts for the club and this weekends final is their final remaining chance at continuing their major trophy winning streak which extends back to the 17/18 season when they won the Premier League and EFL Cup.

Last weekend, City travelled to St Mary’s Stadium to face Southampton, looking to continue their late run to finish second in the Premier League. However, the game certainly didn’t go their way despite having 72% of possession and 26 shots to their opponents' 2, only 5/26 were on target, and they failed to score for the first time since their scoreless draw with Man United last month.

Route To The Final

Third Round –Man City 8-0 Salford City

Fourth Round – Leyton Orient 1-2 Man City

Fifth Round – Man City 3-1 Plymouth

Quarter-Final- Bournemouth 1-2 Man City

Semi-Final- Nottingham Forest 0-2 Man City

City’s third consecutive FA Cup final, though they’ve taken a back step this season, in recent weeks, they’ve been far more formidable.

Key Players To Watch

Jean Phillipe Mateta -Crystal Palace

The Frenchman is a versatile attacker best known for his strong, direct style of player, particularly being able to create space for his teammates through his hold-up play, while also being a competent finisher.

One of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League, and this season he has 17 goals and 4 assists in 43 matches, which translates to a goal contribution every 0.65 matches.

Erling Haaland - Man City

An interesting case, though the Norwegian freak of nature has 30 goals and 4 assists in 41 matches this season. More recently, he has struggled with injury issues, and though he returned to play 90 minutes against Southampton last weekend, he was kept quiet with only 17 touches and 1 shot.

There is an argument to be made that City are no longer set up to create chances for Haaland, which could shockingly have people questioning his place in the team for the weekend. However, it will be very hard to leave him out at the weekend.

Crystal Palace v Man City Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Crystal Palace 0-2 Man City

Crystal Palace have had a fine run to reach the final and know that they have caused City problems twice already this season.

City’s season can be somewhat salvaged over the weekend, and a win would mean that the last season in whereby they didn’t win a “major” trophy was the 16/17 season.

City have been shocked in the FA Cup finals in 2013 and 2024, but they should have enough to get over the line on Saturday.
