Simon Coveney has been backed to be appointed next Tánaiste after it was confirmed that Frances Fitzgerald would be vacating the position on Tuesday afternoon.

The current Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade has shortened into 1/3 favourite for the role after a flurry of bets""

...in the wake of Fitzgerald’s resignation over the Garda whistleblower controversy.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe is Coveney’s main rival to take the role at 6/1 with Eoghan Murphy and Heather Humphries next at 8/1 and 10/1 respectively.

The announcement seems to have staved off the threat of a pre-Christmas General Election which has drifted to 18/1 having been as short as 6/4 as talks continued over the weekend between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.

Punters are now banking on Ireland hitting the polls in 2018 after they backed it into a 1/16 shot having snapped up earlier quotes of 1/2.
