Coral Cup 2023 Preview

Run For Oscar - Coral Cup Favourite 13/2

Just two days after the actual Oscars, Run For Oscar will be hoping for an Oscar winning performance in the Coral Cup. The seven-year-old is trained by Charles Byrnes and now without a win in his last two races.

Despite being two outings without a win this bay gelding has been cut in the betting odds in the lead up to the festival and now finds himself as the favourite for this year's Coral Cup.

Run For Oscar last crossed the winning line on the 8th of October in Newmarket winning over the 2-mile 2 furlong trip, beating a 21-horse-field by 3.25 lengths.

One thing is for sure, if Run For Oscar can win at 7/1 the headlines will write themselves.

Camprond - Coral Cup Second Favourite 7/1

Trained by Phillip Hobbs and owned by J-P McManus, the seven-year-old enters this race as second favourite to land the Coral Cup. Camprond had been the favourite a week out from the race but has seen his odds drift slightly as Run For Oscar has overtaken him for race favouritism.

Despite his second favourite status, Camprond has not been in a rich vein of form of late as the horse is without a win in his last five races, mainly finishing t0wards the back of the field. The horse’s last line of winning form was on the 30th of April in Punchestown over 2-miles 3 furlongs where he defeated a 24-horse-field by a comfortable three lengths.

Camprond is 7/1 to come back to form in-time for the Coral Cup.

HMS Seahorse - 8/1

Trained by Paul Nolan, the five-year-old comes into the race on the back of a victory on the 21st of January in Navan over the 2-mile 4 furlong distance. On that day, this horse managed to beat the 21-horse-field by 2.25 lengths in his return after a 118 days break from the track.

During last year's festival the horse came fourth in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. Will youth be on the side of Seahorse? HMS Seahorse is currently 8/1 to make it two wins in his last two for Paul Nolan and team.

Langer Dan - 10/1

The Dan Skelton trained prospect has 16 outings to his name over hurdles with four wins from those runs. The last of those victories came at Aintree last April where he beat a 21 horse field by 1.75 lengths over a 2-mile 4 furlong trip.

The seven-year-old bay gelding took a 211-day break from the track after that victory and has not been particularly impressive since returning. He has raced at Aintree in November and December and finished 3rd of four and 7th of 13 on those outings.

We most recently saw this Colm Donlon owned horse at Cheltenham's New Year's Day meeting where he finished 8th in a nine runner field, 35 lengths back of the eventual winner.

Langer Dan is 10/1 to return to winning form over hurdles once again by claiming the 2023 Coral Cup.

Beacon Edge - 12/1

Next in the betting for this year's Coral Cup is nine-year-old Beacon Edge who is trained by Noel Meade. The Irish horse has 4 wins in his hurdles career to date with 13 runs under his belt.

The most recent of those four victories came all the way back in November of 2021 at Fairyhouse where the bay gelding beat an eight-horse field by 1.25 lengths. It has been disappointment since then for this horse with eight outings and zero wins to show for them.

We most recently saw this Coral Cup prospect at Navan where he came third in an eight horse field over a 2-mile 5 furlong trip, 6.5 lengths behind the winner.

Beacon Edge is 12/1 to end his winning drought at the Coral Cup on day two of this year's Cheltenham Festival.
