Jonny Clayton paid tribute to opponent Gerwyn Price after scooping his first BoyleSports World Grand Prix title in Leicester on Saturday night with a dominant victory over his fellow Welshman.
A stunning display of darts saw Clayton take out five ton-plus finishes en route to a 5-1 win over his compatriot which saw him rise to number seven in the world rankings.
Speaking to BoyleSports after he left the stage with the trophy, Clayton said: “It was a long week, but to play the world number 1 at the end of it and beat him, it feels fantastic. The big checkouts were a plus, but my starting was fantastic, so I kept the pressure on Gezzy and that was the difference I think.”
The new champion went on to praise his beaten opponent, who had criticised jeering from sections of the crowd following his quarter-final victory over Dave Chisnall.
“I played against a great mate,” Clayton added. “People just see a hug on stage after I won that, but they don’t hear the words he said to me. The respect I have for Gezzy Price is second to none, what a guy.
Price remains the favourite to defend his PDC World Championship title at 4/1, but we have now slashed the odds on ‘The Ferret’ dethroning his World Cup-winning teammate into 6/1 from the 16/1 available just a week ago.
