Paul Nicholls, who hasn’t had a Gold Cup winner since Kauto Star in 2009, now has the third favourite in this year’s antepost market after Clan Des Obeaux put an eye-catching display in the Denman Chase at Ascot on Saturday.
The King George winner produced a stunning leap at the last to go on by 11 lengths from Terrefort in the rearranged race and BoyleSports reacted immediately by cutting the 7-year-old into 6/1 from 8/1, putting him hot on the heels of last year’s winner Native River as the 5/1 second favourite.
Monalee remained unchanged at 25/1 for the Gold Cup after getting the better of a depleted field in the Red Mills Chase over at Gowran Park, but it was the horse in second Anibale Fly that caught the eye of antepost punters.
Barry Geraghty’s mount, who was the highest placed Irish trained finisher when third in last year’s Gold Cup and may benefit from the longer trip at Cheltenham, closed into 20/1 from 33/1 after staying on to finish two lengths behind Monalee.
Waiting Patiently’s first appearance since the King George meanwhile ended in defeat in the Ascot Chase as Cyrname landed the spoils with a dominant performance from the front. He has drifted to 8/1 from 5/1 for the Ryanair Chase while favourite Min is now 5/2 from 3/1 having won on both appearances this season.
...even after we cut him into 6/1 from 8/1 today. Anibale Fly is also earning some respect from our Irish punters after staying on in the Red Mills so the 33/1 quotes about Tony Martin’s charge are a thing of the past.
