Mares' Hurdle Tips & Preview

With Lossiemouth, the plan at the moment is to run in the Champion Hurdle. The fact that she’s entered in the Mares’ Hurdle means there’s always a chance that she could run in it. But at the moment, the plan is that everybody wants to head this direction [for the Champion Hurdle] – or mostly everybody. I don’t have a say [laughing].

Jade De Grugy is the number one for Closutton in the Mares’ Hurdle if Lossiemouth doesn’t run. I mean, she ran very well last year. I can’t understand why people were dismissing her anyway. At Punchestown, she only did what she had to do. If she couldn’t have beaten those, she had no chance.

She was obviously unlucky last year as well. Paul [Townend] and Jack got caught looking at each other last year in a 2-mile race. She does want 2-and-a-half so this year will suit her better. And obviously if the top two don’t run then I think she’s a very strong contender.

Kargese is keen, I entered her in the County Hurdle as well. I think off a mark of 139 she mighn’t be the worst ride in the County Hurdle.

July Flower is a very good mare. She was 2nd in the French Champion Hurdle and put up a very good performance in Leopardstown at Christmas. 2-and-a-half miles around Cheltenham is made for her.

She would want a bit of ease in the ground, would want it on the easy side anyway. If it comes up on the easy side, a strong gallop over 2-and-a-half miles, she won’t be far away. She’ll take plenty of beating.

I think that both Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth will go to the Champion Hurdle. I think July Flower is a big chance to take this Mares’ Hurdle.

I was a lot better at reading Michael O’Leary’s mind than Willie Mullins’ anyway. I’d say that Brighterdaysahead will definitely go for the Champion Hurdle. Gordon Elliott would love to win a Champion Hurdle and he said it’s his best chance and I can’t see why they won’t.

Lossiemouth , David has said enough on that. I thought Jade De Grugy was impressive today from the back, to the last, to the line. She did what she had to do and the 2-and-a-half will help her.

If the top two [Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth] don’t show up it’s not gonig to be the most exciting race compared to other years. Henry de Bromhead’s mare July Flower was impressive in Leopardstown. It’ll be interesting to see what’s declared.

The top two in the betting [Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth] won’t run in it anyways for certain. There’s no way that any of those horses will run. Brighterdaysahead hasn’t a notion of running in this race, not a hope. And neither will Lossiemouth.

Jade De Grugy will be favourite here now, I’d say at about 7/4, and July Flower will be 2nd favourite. Jade De Grugy sets the standard now for sure. I do think July Flower has a chance alright. Even another horse like Kargese and even as far as Jetara might have chances as well. But Jade De Grugy will be favourite. There’s no way in the world any of them top two horses in the betting will run here.

Johnny Dineen’s Mares’ Hurdle Tip: July Flower – 4/1

John ‘Shark’ Hanlon

I think both of the top two in the betting [Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth] won’t run but the filly that I like is she’s a great each-way price Golden Ace (was 10/1 now into 11/2) who won the Mares' Novices' Hurdle race last year. She definitely won’t be out of the first three if the top two in the betting don’t run.

John ‘Shark’ Hanlon’s Mares’ Hurdle Tip: Golden Ace – 11/2

Golden Ace – 11/2
