Doncaster 12:55 Tip
Doncaster 12:55 – Country Code
Ruth Jefferson’s six-year-old can remain unbeaten over timber in the Grade Two River Don Novices’ Hurdle. He looked the real deal in winning what seemed a decent race at Kelso last time out and this race was immediately nominated.
Cheltenham 13:15 Tip
Cheltenham 13:15 – Jagwar
A winner on the same card 12 months ago and then in the Plate at the Festival in March, this progressive seven-year-old is taken to return to winning ways after a slightly unlucky run in the December Gold Cup here.
Keen early, he was then caught short of room at a key time before staying on up the hill to finish third and will surely be better for that outing.
Doncaster 14:05 Tip
Doncaster 14:05 – Walking On Air
Faye Bramley’s gelding looked like winning the Great Yorkshire Chase last year but fell at the last. He is 2lb higher now but having had just one run this term, it looks like this race has been the plan for some time.
Chelsea 14:25 Tip
Cheltenham 14:25 – Grey Dawning
Dan Skelton’s Gold Cup hope oozed class in winning the Betfair Chase at Haydock back in November and looks good to follow up in the Cotswold Chase after being freshened up by a nice break.
While his three rivals are all nice horses in their own right, L’Homme Presse is being campaigned with the Grand National in mind, Spillane’s Tower is on a retrieval mission and Flooring Porter is having his first run for 486 days.
Cheltenham 15:00 Tip
Cheltenham 15:00 – The New Lion
Skelton’s pride and joy bids to bounce back from a fall in the Fighting Fifth and boost his Champion Hurdle claims by getting the better of current ante-post favourite Sir Gino .
The New Lion ended last season as the leading novice following an unbeaten campaign that included a Cheltenham victory over the much-vaunted Final Demand.
He blotted his copybook when coming down at the second last at Newcastle but was still in front and travelling strongly enough at the time, so we’re keeping the faith.
Sir Gino easily accounted for Golden Ace at Kempton on Boxing Day but that was his first outing for almost a year and the dreaded ‘bounce’ theory could be a factor here, while The New Lion also receives a handy 3lb allowance.
Cheltenham 15:35 Tip
Cheltenham 15:35 – Impose Toi
Nicky Henderson’s eight-year-old finished last season with solid runner-up efforts at the Cheltenham and Punchestown festivals and a fine fourth of 20 at Aintree under 12st in between, but he has really taken his form to a new level this term.
Wins over Strong Leader in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury and the Long Walk at Ascot have cemented his position as the best in the staying division in the UK and there could be even more progress to come in the Cleeve Hurdle.
