We have a Cheltenham Day 3 recap for you after a pulsating day of action from the biggest event in the horse racing calendar.
Cheltenham Day 3 Recap
Teahupoo Wins Stayers' Hurdle
Stayers’ Hurdle winner Teahupoo was a standout winner for punters at Cheltenham on Thursday after they bounced back from a tricky start to inflict more damage on the bookies.
Sir Alex Ferguson Double
Part-owner Sir Alex Ferguson toasted his own double in the winners’ enclosure on ‘St Patrick’s Thursday’ at the Festival as 25/1 outsider Monmiral and Ryanair runner Protektorat landed victories at the expense of well-backed Irish fancies Icare Allen and Envoi Allen.
Punters had the wind back in their sails when Gordon Elliott’s Teahupoo landed the feature Stayers’ Hurdle, but oddsmakers managed to dodge a major bullet when the much-hyped Brighterdaysahead was upset by 10/1 shot Golden Ace in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.
A bruising week for bookmakers could be compounded on Friday at Cheltenham, where popular Willie Mullins favourite Galopin Des Champs bids to record back-to-back victories in the Gold Cup.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:
“We were on a rollercoaster ride on Thursday with some big results going in our favour, but Gordon Elliott got in on the act and the favourite in the last race also gave punters plenty to cheer about ahead of a decisive day. It’s 2-1 to the punters at this stage, but it’s all to play for on Gold Cup Friday.”
