Retired jockey Robbie Power has claimed that Honeysuckle should be favourite to complete a Champion Hurdle hat-trick at the Cheltenham Festival next year ahead of Constitution Hill.

Henry de Bromhead’s superstar mare goes into the new National Hunt season with an unblemished record after 16 races, but is currently second favourite in the antepost betting for the Champion Hurdle at 7/2 behind the Nicky Henderson-trained 11/8 favourite, who broke a track record when landing the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham this year.

Power however believes he has it all to prove ahead of a potential blockbuster showdown between the pair at next year’s Festival.

“We all know the route Honeysuckle will take,” he told BoyleSports. “It’ll be Hatton’s Grace, Dublin Racing Festival, then Cheltenham. It’ll be interesting to see where Constitution Hill starts – he has an easier option at Sandown, but I hope he goes to the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle to give us an idea of how good he can be and to prove the Cheltenham performance wasn’t a one-off.

“One thing for sure is they won’t meet until Cheltenham and hopefully by then Honeysuckle goes there with her unbeaten record intact and Constitution Hill will be the young pretender coming to take her on. It’ll be a fantastic and fascinating clash.

“Constitution Hill has to take that step into open company and I think at this moment Honeysuckle should be favourite for the Champion Hurdle. The ground on Tuesday at Cheltenham this year was the quickest I’ve known in my 16 years as a jockey and that’s why I think the clock read so well for Constitution Hill."

"Honeysuckle is the level they have to reach and we’ll have to wait to see if Constitution Hill is up to that level.”
