Chelsea v Luton Town - Preview

Chelsea’s Form

Chelsea had a horrible 22/23 season 12th in the bottom half of the table for the first time since the 95/96 season. They enter this season with another new manager at the helm with the appointment of the former Tottenham and PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino becoming official on the 1st of July.

Pochettino inherited an extremely large squad and despite seeing seventeen players go out the door for this season already through varying degrees, they’ve brought in a further six signings for over £200 million with several returning loanees also expected to come into the first-team.

Nevertheless, there is a lot of genuine quality in the Chelsea squad and if they can integrate new signings Nkunku (when he returns from injury) and Disasi amongst others and the returning Gusto, Maatesen and Colwill they could shock a few this season. Their pre-season was solid too with three wins and two draws.

Chelsea commenced their league campaign with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool with a Disasi equalizer giving them their first point of the season. It was a well deserved point too in an even match where they created an XG of 1.4 to Liverpool’s 1.3.

They failed to build on that promising start in their most recent outing. At the weekend, despite creating an XG of 2.5 to West Ham’s 1.8, they lost 3-1 in a disappointing London Derby.

Luton Town's Form

Luton Town are the newest Premier League club following their excellent Championship 22/23 season where they finished third on the table qualifying for the Championship Play-Offs.

Luton even overcame defeat in the Play-Off Semi-Final first-leg 1-2 they had a 2-0 second-leg victory to get into the final. In the Play-Off final they drew 1-1 against Coventry AET before winning 6-5 on penalties and confirming their Premier League status.

Luton had an interesting off-season and how they’re approaching their promotion to the Premier League. While plenty of sides when promoted look to overhaul their squad completely (like Nottingham Forrest last season).

The club retained a large baulk of their promotion squad whilst also making some shrewd additions with the likes of Ogbene, Chong, Barkley and Krul coming in. Plenty are expecting this Luton side to finish bottom of the table, I’m not so sure and I think they could shock a few with their performances this year.

In their opening game of the season they faced a buoyant Brighton who battered them 4-1, Brighton had 71% of possession and created an XG of 4.0 to their 1.5. Their second fixture against Burnley was postponed as they continue to upgrade their stadium so this will only be our second opportunity to get a look at Luton in the Premier League this season.

Chelsea v Luton Town Head-to-Head Results

Chelsea have two wins against Luton Town in recent times.

Chelsea v Luton Town Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Luton Town

Chelsea will be looking to get their first win of the season in this one and I think they will do so narrowly. Luton got a reality check against Brighton in the opening weekend, but Chelsea could ironically prove an easier test.

Best Bet: Winning Margin Chelsea By Exactly 1 Goal @ 3/1
