Celtic v Young Boys Preview

Celtic’s Form

Celtic claimed another domestic double in the 23/24 season, but it was another Group Stage elimination in the Champions League that removed the gloss from their season.

They currently lead the SPL by thirteen points clear of bitter rivals Rangers twenty-three games into the season which means another league title could be on the cards in the coming months. Furthermore, the change in the Champions League format has given them their best chance of competing in Europe in arguably over a decade.

Celtic opened their Champions League journey taking full advantage of the new format beating Slovan Bratislava 5-1. However, they got their seasonal dose of Champions League reality on the following matchday being comprehensively beaten 7-1 by Dortmund.

In their third game, they had tightened up by drawing 0-0 away to Atalanta and then had a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig. In their most recent games, they drew 1-1 at Celtic Park against Club Brugge as well as away to Dinamo Zagreb.

Celtic are currently in an unseeded knockout playoff place, but a win could all but confirm a playoff position at a minimum.

Young Boys’ Form

In 23/24 Young Boys had a strong domestic season winning their second successive Swiss Super League and reaching the Quarter-Final of the Swiss Cup. However, they finished third in their Champions League group and were subsequently dumped out of the Europa League playoffs 4-2 on aggregate to Sporting.

Despite that promise 24/25 has been less positive with them currently ninth and well off the place in the Swiss Super League.

Their Champions League journey may be six games in but they remain pointless following six successive defeats. They were beaten convincingly 0-3 by Aston Villa and battered 5-0 by Barcelona in their opening two fixtures.

That was followed by two more competitive games albeit with the same result losing 0-1 to Inter and 2-1 against Shakhtar. Any hopes of managing a late playoff surge were stifled in their next two games, again battered 1-6 by Atalanta and 5-1 against Stuttgart.

Young Boys' faith is sealed sitting bottom of the league phase 36th and pointless, but they can put a damper on Celtic’s hopes with a result in this game.

Key Players To Watch

Kyogo – Celtic

The Japanese attacker (29) has been a crucial component of Celtic’s success since signing for the club in 2021 scoring 85 times and assisting 19 from 164 games across all competitions and remains their most reliable attacking threat in 2024.

Kyogo has 12 goals and 4 assists across 31 games in all competitions this season in this game he is priced at 7/2 to score first and 10/11 to score anytime.

Cedric Itten – Young Boys

Swiss Striker Itten (28) ironically signed for Young Boys from Celtic’s bitter rivals Rangers in the summer of 2022 and he’s been an overwhelming success scoring 44 times and assisting 19 from just 107 games in all competitions.

When at Rangers he appeared in 2 games against Celtic albeit for only 17 minutes in total he was on the winning side on both occasions. This year for Young Boys he has 8 goals and 4 assists from 27 games and is priced at 12/1 to score first or 7/2 to score at any time in this game.

Celtic v Young Boys Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Celtic 2-0 Young Boys

This new Champions League format has worked wonders for Celtic and they look very likely to reach the knockout stages of the competition for the first time since the 2012/13 season when they lost 5-0 on aggregate in the Round of 16 to Juventus.

Young Boys are having a poor season both domestically and in Europe and it’s very difficult to see that ending anytime soon.

Celtic to win this game comfortably.
