Celtic v Rangers Preview

Celtic’s Form

Celtic head into Sunday’s huge Old Firm looking to extend their lead at the top of the table with 78 points which would be 19 points ahead of Rangers. It seems only a matter of time time that they will win their fourth successive SPL title and 11th of the last 12 seasons win at the weekend and they will be only six away from the title. They’ve already won the League Cup this season on penalties against Rangers and are into the Scottish Cup semi-final though they were knocked out of the Champions League in the playoff against Bayern by a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

Last weekend Celtic had a 2-0 Scottish Cup Quarter-Final win over Hibernian following goals from Maeda in the 39th minute and Idah in the 92nd minute. It was a dominant display having 63% of the ball and having 18 shots to 3 and 13 corners to 2. This made it three successive wins in all competitions.

Victory in this game would all but guarantee the SPL is confirmed sooner rather than later.

Rangers’ Form

Rangers enter Sunday’s huge Old Firm knowing that they need a win to stand any chance of making up the 16-point gap between themselves and the league leaders in the closing months of the season. However, their domestic form has been questionable which saw Phillipe Clement removed on the 23rd of February and replaced by interim Barry Ferguson. In Europe, they’ve been far more consistent and are into the Europa Quarter-Finals.

Midweek Rangers held a 3-1 aggregate lead as they headed into their home leg against Fenerbahçe. Though they fell to a 0-2 defeat in normal time, they held their nerve to hold on for penalties. They managed to overcome the “lottery” that is penalties to win 3-2 and book a quarter-final place against Athletic Club.

Whether they can win the SPL or not, this is never a game the club will want to lose.

Key Players To Watch

Adam Idah - Celtic

Idah initially signed on loan in February 2024 and if the Parkhead spotlight wasn’t daunting enough he came under considerable criticism from supporters for not being of the perceived required standards, mind you this came before he even played a minute and when he did they were soon silenced with 9 goals in 19 games which earned him a permanent move the next summer.

With Kyogo gone, Idah has the chance the claim the starting striker spot and will be looking to add to his tally of 14 goals and 1 assist in 43 games this season so far. He is priced at 11/2 to score first and 13/8 to score anytime.

Adam Idah first goal - 11/2

Hamza Igamane- Rangers

The Moroccan U23 International (22) had an impressive start to his debut season scoring 13 times and assisting 3 from his first 25 games in all competitions. However, more recently he’s undergone somewhat of a drought not scoring since his hat trick against Hibernian on the 5th of January meaning he now has 13 goals and 3 assists in 36 games.

He’s a well-rounded attacker both in and out of possession and his dribbling and finishing ability in particular could cause a unreliable United defence issues. He is priced at 8/1 to score first and 11/4 to score anytime.

Hamza Igamane anytime goal - 11/4

Celtic v Rangers Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Celtic 2-1 Rangers

Celtic look destined for another SPL title and should be fresh given they had no midweek game.

Rangers could be tired both mentally and physically following their midweek European tie that went to penalties which could swing the game further away from them.

I fancy Celtic to edge this game.
