Celtic v Bayern Preview

Celtic’s Form

Celtic claimed another domestic double in the 23/24 season, but it was another Group Stage elimination in the Champions League which removed the gloss on their season. They currently lead the SPL by thirteen points clear of bitter rivals Rangers twenty-three games into the season which means another league title could be on the cards in the coming months.

This new Champions League format has worked wonders for Celtic holding their own across eight matches their record of three victories, three draws and two defeats was good enough to finish 21st in the league phase (one place and a point ahead of Man City) to comfortably book their place in these playoffs. However, this is a very different challenge for Celtic closer to the ability of Dortmund and Aston Villa who lost 7-1 and 4-2 respectively too.

There is very little pressure on Celtic to win this game but will need to be in tip-top form to avoid another heavy defeat at the hands of German opposition.

Bayern’s Form

Before last season Bayern dominated the Bundesliga winning 11 consecutive titles but in 23/24 they were undone to the fairytale story of Bayer Leverkusen led by Xabi Alonso landing their first league title. That prompted them to sign the likes of Olise, Paulinha and Ito for a net spend of €-67.65m this summer. That spending has hit all the right notes so far with Bayern leading the Bundesliga eight clear of Leverkusen.

Their Champions League form has been a mixed bag so far opening with a comprehensive 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb but that was followed by defeats albeit against strong opponents 1-0 against Aston Villa and 4-1 against Barcelona. Victories over Benfica, PSG and Donetsk followed before a shock 3-0 loss to Feyenoord. They capped off the league phase with a 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava.

Despite missing out on an automatic Round of 16 spot Bayern remain a serious contenders for the competition in the outright market.

Bayern 4-3 Holstein Kiel | February 1st | Win

Bayern 3-1 Slovan Bratislava | January 29th | Win

Key Players To Watch

Adam Idah - Celtic

Since initially signing on loan for the club in February 2024, Idah now (23) was thrust into the Parkhead spotlight and came under considerable criticism for not being at the perceived required standard by Celtic “supporters”. However, he quickly silenced the doubters scoring 9 goals in 19 games which earned him a permanent move the next summer.

However, a new challenge is on the way with Kyogo departing and Maeda suspended Idah has a chance to claim the main starting striker role for this game and will be looking to add to his tally of 12 goals and 1 assist in 36 games this season so far. He is priced at 11/1 to score first and 10/3 to score anytime.

Harry Kane – Bayern Munich

Despite a red-hot first season for Bayern since signing from Tottenham last season 44 goals and 12 assists in 45 games was ironically not enough to land Bayern any trophy despite their previous Bundesliga dominance.

Kane has similarly started this season fire with 28 goals and 10 assists from 28 games. Harry Kane is 11/4 to score first and 8/13 to score anytime.

Celtic v Bayern Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Celtic 0-3 Bayern

Celtic have dominated domestically this season and have held their own in Europe for the most part. However, there will be cause for concern when considering on matchday two they lost 7-1 to Dortmund who trail Bayern in the league.

Following a poor season last year, Bayern bought and have bounced back strongly on all fronts and though were unable to qualify automatically for the Round of 16 they will be comfortable favourites for a reason to see off Celtic over the two legs.

Bayern should win by at least a goal in this game due to the gulf in quality between both sides.
