Cavan v Dublin Preview
Cavan’s Form
Cavan had a largely positive 2023 season gaining promotion from Division 3 in the Football League coming 2nd and 2 points behind Fermanagh in the league phase before beating them in the League Final 1-07 to 0-16. However, they were knocked out at the first hurdle in Ulster against Armagh 0-12 to 1-14. In the Taiteann Cup, they topped their group Offaly, Laois and London following 3 wins before being knocked out in the Quarter-Final by Down 0-15 to 1-17.
Cavan continued their positive trajectory in 2024, where they finished 3rd in Division 2 on 7 points behind Donegal and Armagh but ahead of the likes of Cork, Meath and Louth. In the Ulster Championship, they were knocked out by Tyrone by a 3-16 to 1-23 scoreline.
Having been drawn in a tough All-Ireland Series Group with Dublin, Mayo and Roscommon, they lost their opening game against Mayo by a 0-20 to 1-08 scoreline.
Dublin’s Form
Dublin were back to their dominant best last season, following a 2nd place Division 2 finish 1 point behind Derry in the league phase when it came to the League Final they were convincing 0-11 to 4-06 winners.
That was followed by a Leinster Championship victory after beating Laois, Kildare and Louth. Finally, in the All-Ireland Series, they topped their group ahead of Kildare, Roscommon and Sligo to reach the Quarter-Final. Dublin were eventually crowned All-Ireland Champions again after defeating Mayo, Monaghan and Kerry on their way.
Their Division 1 campaign this season had a similar story, initially finishing below Derry (this time by 2 points) they again met in a League Final but this time Derry were victorious following a 2-21 to 3-18 draw in Croke Park Derry won out 1-3 on penalties. Dublin were again rampant in the Leinster Championship after defeating Meath, Offaly and Louth again in the Leinster Final.
Having been drawn in an All-Ireland Series Group with Cavan, Mayo and Roscommon, they won their opening game against Roscommon by a 2-19 to 0-13 scoreline.
Cavan v Dublin Rivalry
The last time these sides played each other in the All-Ireland Championship was in the All Ireland CSemi-Final in 2020 where Cavan were convincingly beaten by Dublin in a 0-12 (12) to 1-24 (27) scoreline
Prediction: Cavan 0-10 Dublin 2-20
Cavan’s stock in the Gaelic Football world may be very much on an upward trajectory in recent years but this remains very much a herculean task to try and get something out of their All-Ireland Series game on Saturday.
Reigning All-Ireland Champions Dublin may have lost out in the league final on penalties against Derry but they have since then bounced back winning another Leinster Football Championship and commencing their All-Ireland Series campaign with a convincing win against Roscommon.
Cavan may have home advantage and are on the rise as a team, but the difference in levels between themselves and Dublin is night and day and they could be in line for a bad beating on the scoreline Saturday.
