Castres v Munster Preview

Castres Form

Castres qualified for the Champions Cup following their 7th finish in the Top-14 last year only losing out of a playoff semi-final spot on points difference to Racing 92. Their Challenge Cup run started with a fourth finish in their pool behind Gloucester, Clermont and Edinburgh but ahead of Black Lion and Scarlets.  They were then knocked out of the Round of 16 against Gloucester 30-25.

This season is going similarly with 6 wins and 5 defeats from their opening 11 Top-14 games meaning they’re currently in 7th place. They were also disappointingly beaten 38-8 against Northampton in their opening Champions Cup game.

Castres are no slouches so can’t be underestimated especially with home advantage on Friday Night.

Munster Form

Munster have been on a progressive trajectory in the last two seasons, winning the URC in the 2022/23 season which was their first major piece of silverware since when they won the Magners League in the 2010/11 season. Last season they topped the URC table though they were knocked out in the Semi-Final. In the Champions Cup, they were eliminated at the Last 16 stage for the second successive season.

They’ve had a poor start to the 24/25 season though with only 3 victories and 4 defeats from their opening 7 matches and have a negative score difference of -23. However, they opened their Champions Cup campaign last weekend with a comprehensive 33-7 win over Stade Francais.

Munster have not been at their best this season but last weekend's result was a good sign of their chances in this game though Castres are four places above them in the Top-14.

Key Players

Geoffrey Palis – Castres

The two-time French International (33) has been a mainstay for Castres for over a decade first appearing for them in 2013. He has gone on to make 196 appearances and has scored 446 points. If Castres are to win at the weekend, Palis is very likely to be someone who gets on the scoresheet.

Peter O’Mahony– Munster

The Munster and Ireland Legend (35) may be approaching the tail end of his career but he remains a consummate professional and a star for both club and country. He returned to Munster last weekend and didn’t miss a step gathering 11 line-outs, carrying well and disrupting Stade’s performance.

Castres v Munster Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Castres 10-26 Munster

Castres look to be on an upward trajectory in recent years albeit a very slow one. They come into this match though on the back of two successive defeats 38-8 against Northampton and 54-10 against Clermont, They will need to step it up here if they’re to have a chance of winning.

On the other hand, Munster are coming off the back of two successive wins 33-7 against Stade Francais and 17-10 against Lions and will look to continue their momentum before heading into two provincial derbies during the Christmas Period.

The odds are extremely tight between both teams, but I think Munster should be too good in the end for Castres.

Best Bet: Munster @ 4/5
