Carabao Cup Betting Favourites

Liverpool 3/1

Liverpool had a disappointing season last season; they entered the season as EFL Cup and FA Cup champions but were disappointingly dumped out of the League Cup by Man City at the Fourth-round stage 3-2.

EFL Cup Results 2022/23

Their run was as follows:

Third Round – Liverpool 0-0 Derby (3-2 penalties win)

Fourth Round – Man City - 3-2  Liverpool

Chances?

However, Liverpool look a different animal this season, unbeaten in their first eight games in all competitions with seven wins and one draw

The additions of Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Endo and Gravenberch have really freshened up the squad after their ageing core of Milner, Keita, Chamberlain, Henderson, Fabinho and Firmino all left the club.

Liverpool opened their 23/24 EFL Cup campaign with a brilliant 3-1 comeback victory over Championship league leaders Leicester.

They have been handed a relatively easy Fourth-round draw where they'll be away to Bournemouth. Based off their early season form they're worthy favourites.

Arsenal 7/2

Mikel Arteta deserves plaudits for the job he has done since becoming Arsenal manager back in 2019. He has brought the side from a fifth place finish in 21/22 to a second-place finish and a title challenge for much of the 22/23 season. However, they could be criticised for abandoning their campaigns in the other competitions.

EFL Cup Results 2022/23

Their 22/23 League Cup run was as follows:

Third Round –Arsenal 1-3 Brighton

Chances?

Arsenal, seemingly hell-bent on bringing on their side further this season, have gone big with their recruitment spending roughly £208.6 million (excluding undisclosed figures) on Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice.

Arsenal overcame a difficult Third round draw in Brentford with a 0-1 victory through an early Reiss Nelson goal to keep their name in the hat for another round.

Arsenal are another team unbeaten across their eight games in all competitions this season. They will fancy their chances in this competition despite a difficult away draw to West Ham in the next round.

Manchester United 4/1

Erik ten Hag had a positive first season as Manchester United manager returning the club to the Champions League with a third-place Premier League finish along with a runners-up finish in the FA Cup. They are also of course the defending EFL Cup champions having won their first-ever trophy under ten Hag in the competition.

EFL Cup Results 2022/23

Their run to the title last year was as follows:

Third Round – Man United 4-2 Aston Villa

Fourth Round – Man United 2-0 Burnley

Quarter-Final- Man United 3-0 Charlton

Semi-Fina Leg One – Nottingham  Forrest 0-3 Man United

Semi-Fina Leg Two – Man  United 2-0 Nottingham Forrest

Final – Man United 2-0 Newcastle

Chances?

Manchester United are expected to be even stronger this season following the additions of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Højlund.

It's been a stuttering start to the season with problems for the club on and off-the-field. However, they racked up their best performance of the season in the Third round against Crystal Palace winning 3-0 Garnacho, Casemiro and Martial all getting on the scoresheet.

They've a difficult Fourth round tie though at home to Newcastle in a repeat of last season's final.

Chelsea 5/1

Chelsea had a horrible 22/23 season having finished 12th which was their first time in the bottom half of the table since the 95/96 season when they were managed by Glenn Hoddle. That dismal season was no surprise given that the club was in a constant state of turmoil having gone through so many managers.

EFL Cup Results 2022/23

Their League Cup run was as follows:

Third Round – Man City 2-0 Chelsea

Chances?

Pochettino inherited an extremely large squad and despite seeing seventeen players go out the door for this season already through varying degrees, they’ve brought in a further six signings for over £200 million which brings their total expenditure to over £800 million in the last two season and counting!

There's no doubt Chelsea have the quality to far in this competition even if they seem to be consistently characteristically chaotic this season again.

However a 2-1 Second round win over AFC Wimbledon and a 1-0 Third round win over Brighton will give them plenty of confidence. Having drawn Blackburn in the Fourth round they will be fancied again to go through.

Newcastle 5/1

Newcastle United are on an upward trajectory, Eddie Howe has done an excellent job thus far leading them from an 11th-place finish last season to qualifying for next season’s Champions League after a 4th-place finish in the league last season.

The highlight of that season might have been their run to the 22/23 EFL Cup final where they eventually lost to Man United.

EFL Cup Results 2022/23

Their full League Cup run was as follows:

Second Round – Tranmere Rovers 1-2 Newcastle

Third Round – Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace (3-2 penalties)

Fourth Round –Newcastle 2-0 Bournemouth

Quarter-Final- Newcastle 2-0 Leicester City

Semi-Final Leg One –Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

Semi-Fina Leg Two –Newcastle 2-1 Southampton

Final – Man United 2-0 Newcastle

Chances?

Despite their disappointment in the EFL Cup final last season, along with the added strain of having Champions League football, the next step in the Newcastle trajectory will be to win a trophy.

Newcastle claimed a shock 1-0 Third round victory over Manchester City to really establish themselves again as contenders for the prize. They've been handed another difficult tie in the Fourth round against Manchester United though in a repeat of last year's final

If they were to win the League Cup it would be their first ever win in the competition having come runners- up in 1976 and 2023.

Team to Watch - West Ham 11/1

West Ham were eliminated at the Third round stage last year following a 2-2 draw with Blackburn they lost 9-10 on penalties.

Much is made of Moyes credentials (unjustly in my opinion) and whether he should be sacked following poor league performances. However, their Europa Conference League success last season shows Moyes can guide this team to trophies.

While they were handed a tough draw in Arsenal, if they overcame The Gunners with at least one of Man United/Newcastle to be knocked out they would be cut considerably with a victory.
