Venue

St George’s Golf & Country Club in Toronto, Ontario is a 7,014 yard par 70 with only three par 5s. It’s a classic, tree-lined, undulating venue with thick rough and slopey greens. It last hosted in 2010 and accuracy is essential.

The Favourites

Sam Burns is the one I found hardest to resist. He is elite now and won on his last start. I like Shane Lowry of the ones towards the top too, but Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas may have eyes on next week’s US Open. This track punishes inaccurate driving and if Scheffler has one weakness, it is that.

Headline Tip

Corey Conners (16/1) is ready to make a huge impact in his national open for the first time. Conners has gone up several levels and his form in The Masters since the last Canadian Open two years ago is 10, 8, 6. He has also finished 3rd in the WGC Matchplay since then, 3rd in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and 7th in the Players Championship.

This is a player who is comfortable on leaderboards in elite events and approaches this tournament with confidence and excitement, rather than the nerves that have held him back in the past. His performance at Muirfield Village last week was superb. He opened and closed with rounds of 69, he finished tied-13th and he topped the approach play and greens in regulation stats. He’s the perfect fit for St George’s, so a half decent week around the greens and Conners can delight his home fans.

Next Best

Like Conners, Mackenzie Hughes (45/1) is a Canadian who will be looking to dazzle in front of supportive galleries this week. He was 8th in the 2018 Canadian Open and he was outside the world’s top 250 at that point. He’s a much more established player now and like Conners, he has started performing in majors. He was 15th in the US Open and 6th in The Open last year.

He was 9th in the Wells Fargo recently which is a similar assignment to this week. Short game class is how Hughes gets the job done and his secret weapon is his caddy Jace Walker, a good player in his own right who won a prestigious amateur event at St George’s in 2009. He knows the track, Hughes was born in Ontario and is extremely comfortable at the venue – they could be a dream team this week.

Others

I’m going to make it a trio of Canadians with Adam Hadwin (28/1). He has won twice on the Canadian Tour, twice on the Korn Ferry Tour and once on the PGA Tour by showing a lot of bottle to edge out Patrick Cantlay in the 2017 Valspar Championship.

He’s twice played in the President’s Cup and I don’t think there’s any doubt that Hadwin has the minerals. Canada is desperate for a winner in this event, they haven’t had one since 1954 and Hadwin can handle that. His 18th last week at The Memorial was his fifth top 20 of the year.

Tips:
Corey Conners 16/1
Mackenzie Hughes 45/1
Adam Hadwin 28/1
