The Form - Canada Women v Ireland Women

Canada’s Form

The Canadians were held to a 0-0 draw in their opening game of this Women’s World Cup. That result was a big surprise as Canada were installed as the group favourites prior to the start of this Women’s World Cup and Nigeria were seen as the weakest team in Group B.

The big moment in this game occurred shortly after half-time when Canada were awarded a penalty after a foul on captain Christine Margaret Sinclair. It was Sinclair who stepped up to take the resulting penalty but her attempt was stopped by a brilliant save from Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Despite 16 shots at goal Canada could only manage to direct three of them on target and it was this poor performance in front of goals which saw them drop two points in this opening round game.

Prior to the start of this tournament Canada had a shaky run of form. In 2023 they have now played 5 games and have only won one of those. Their full record for 2023 reads; 1 win, 1 draw and 3 defeats.

Ireland’s Form

Ireland have not been in great form in 2023 since qualifying for this year’s Women’s World Cup. This team only has one victory in 2023 which came in a 3-2 win over Zambia back in June. That was the same Zambian side that beat one of the tournament favourites Germany 2-3 in the beginning of July.

Ireland’s first outing of this Women’s World Cup came against Australia in Stadium Australia on Thursday. The Girls in Green put in a strong performance but were wasteful in front of goal which meant they would fall to a 1-0 loss against the tournament hosts.

In that game, Ireland could only manage one shot on target from 9 attempts. However, they also limited Australia to only 2 shots on target but unfortunately one of those was the winning goal which came from the penalty spot.

That opening day result means the Irish ladies have a lot of work to do if they are to achieve qualification from this group. They now sit bottom of the group but their hopes were boosted as Group B favourites Canada were held to a draw against Nigeria in their opening game.

Canada Women v Ireland Women Head-To-Head Results

Canada Women 2-1 Ireland Women | 12th of March, 2014

Canada and Ireland’s women’s teams have gone head-to-head on one occasion before and that was almost a decade ago in 2014. On that occasion it was the Canadians who got the better of proceedings with a 2-1 victory.

Canada v Ireland Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Canada 1-1 Ireland

Canada have been in poor form this year with only one victory in their five outings this year. The Canadians have pedigree having won the gold medal in 2021 for the postponed 2020 Olympics but recent form makes me think Ireland can get a draw here and keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Best Bet: Correct Score - Draw 1-1 @ 13/2
