BoyleSports World Grand Prix Round 2 Preview - Wednesday Night
Nathan Aspinall vs Ryan Joyce
Time: 19:00
Aspinall v Joyce Odds | ||
---|---|---|
Player | Odds | Chance |
Nathan Aspinall | 8/13 | 61.9% |
Ryan Joyce | 13/10 | 43.5% |
World Number (6) Nathan Aspinall (33) is a former World Grand Prix Finalist when in 2022 he lost 3-5 to Michael Van Gerwen in the final. Ahead of this competition, he was in poor form with his best result in a major event coming at The Masters where he was eliminated at the Semi-Final stage.
In the first round he claimed a 2-1 victory over Ryan Searle following legs of 3-1, 0-3 and 3-2 though they won the same amount of “legs” he won the crucial ones to win with an average of 92.92 compared to 93.43.
“Relentless” Ryan Joyce has been playing the PDC tour since 2018 and even reached the World Championship Quarter Final in 2018. His best finish in this event before this year was when he reached the Last 16 in 2020.
Ryan averaged 85.93 points in the first round which was enough to win 0-2 against an underperforming Josh Rock (80.64) following a 2-3 and 0-3 set victories.
Best Bet: Full House (Win Match, Highest Checkout, Most 180s) Nathan Aspinall @ 10/3
Rob Cross vs Martin Schindler
Time: 20:00
Cross v Schindler Odds | ||
---|---|---|
Player | Odds | Chance |
Rob Cross | 4/6 | 60% |
Martin Schindler | 6/5 | 43.5% |
Rob Cross is finding form again reaching 3 Quarter-Finals and 1 Semi-Final in 2024 along with a victory on the European Tour (among several strong showings). He’s never particularly performed at this event though with his best finishes being a Last 16 in 2019 and 2021 before 2024.
He claimed a shock first-round victory over Luke Littler playing out a 2-1 thriller with all but one set going the distance 3-2, 2-3 and 3-1. That was a huge win for Rob Cross, and he’s now asserted himself as one of the major contenders for the World Grand Prix by my reckoning.
While Schindler has struggled in major events, on the European Tour this season he has been a consistent performer winning the 2024 International Darts Open and the 2024 Swiss Darts Trophy.
Schindler had the good fortune of coming against a misfiring Brendan Dolan (81.55) in the opening round and following set victories of 0-3 and 2-3 he claimed the 0-2 win with a solid average of 89.95
Best Bet: Rob Cross @ 4/6
Luke Humphries vs Ricardo Pietreczko
Time: 21:00
Humphries v Pietreczko Odds | ||
---|---|---|
Player | Odds | Chance |
Luke Humphries | 1/7 | 87.5% |
Ricardo Pietreczko | 9/2 | 18.2% |
World Number (1) “Cool Hand Luke” (29) has become a serial winner these last two years winning 6 major events including the PDC World Championship, World Matchplay and World Cup of Darts in 2024.
In the first round, he overcame potential banana skin Stephen Bunting by a 2-1 overall scoreline after coming from behind in the first set losing 0-3 to win 3-2 and 3-1 averaging 89.87 compared to his opponents 87.19.
Pietreczko (29) is ranked 32 in the world and has been playing professionally since 2010. His best form has been on the PDC European Tour reaching the Semi-Final of the 2024 Belgian Darts Open in March and recently was a finalist in the Flanders Darts Trophy last September losing 6-8 to Chisnall.
He claimed a shock victory over an underperforming van Barneveld (79.87) 1-2 with individual victories of 2-3, 3-2 and 0-3 with an average of 83.29. However, he will need to step it up considerably in this game if he is to go any further.
Best Bet: Luke Humphries to win with a full house @ 10/11
Johnny Clayton vs Ross Smith
Time: 22:00
Clayton v Smith Odds | ||
---|---|---|
Player | Odds | Chance |
Johnny Clayton | 11/10 | 47.6% |
Ross Smith | 8/11 | 57.9% |
At one point “The Ferrett” was one of the most consistent players on tour from 2021-2024 but specifically in 2021 when he won four major events. Though he’s fallen back recently he remains a threat to anyone on his day.
In the first round, he had a strong average of 93.71 compared to his opponent's 86.35 to win 3-1 and 3-2 in individual sets to win 2-0 overall and book his place in the second round.
Ross Smith (35) has grown in stature in recent years and in 2024 reached the World Matchplay Quarter-Finals as well as the latter stages of several European Tour events and is well capable of a strong run in this event.
He put in an exceptional showing in the first round being the only player to average more than 100 so far with a 101.79 average to win 0-2 overall after 0-3 and 1-3 individual victories made all the more impressive with his opponent averaging a strong 94.67.
Best Bet: Ross Smith @ 8/11
