The BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby begins this Friday, October 18th with 78 dogs beginning their journey to fight it out to win one of the sport's biggest prizes. Here we preview each heat from Round 1 Heats 1-13.

BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Round 1 Tips – Friday Heats

Heat 1 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) De Foxy Devil – 4/1

(2) Breaghmore Dice – 8/1

(3) Fairy Footsteps – 6/1

(4) Toolmaker Note – 4/1

(5) Coosane Pickles – 8/11

(6) Labana Cody – 16/1

Tip

The first head of the Derby is a competitive affair with all participants being lightly raced and relatively young dogs. Coosane Pickles at 8/11 is the worthy favourite having the best clock for the 550 (29.37). Toolmaker Note as a 4/1 each-way chance.

Heat 2 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Hawkfield Abbie – 12/1

(2) Da Real Madjack – 33/1

(3) Ballymac Wendy– 8/1

(4) Beanos Podge – 25/1

(5) Buckos Diamond – 1/3

(6) Ryhope Beach – 3/1

Tip

The sensationally quick Buckos Diamond is the natural favourite here at odds of 1/3, but I’ll be looking elsewhere for value and the market for second place.

Ryhope Beach has 29.34 for the 550 done and is a great each-way chance at odds of 3/1.

Heat 3 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Kapuka Warrior – 3/1

(2) Darraghs Sydney – 7/2

(3) Clona Stand – 11/4

(4) Blastof Rex – 6/1

(5) Rough Frankie – 16/1

(6) Maireads Prince – 7/4

Tip

An interesting race, Maireads Prince is the favourite for Fraser Black with odds of 7/4, but my choice here is Blastof Rex for each way punt at odds of 6/1 he was very unlucky last weekend and should come on more from that run.

Heat 4 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Cheque For Cash – 5/2

(2) Daleroad Devon – 9/2

(3) Getup Me Lad – 12/1

(4) Evolution – 3/1

(5) Carrick Aldo – 11/8

(6) Kilgraney Bolger – 33/1

Tip

The prolific Carrick Aldo is priced at 11/8 to make it 18 successes from 28 races though a solo of 29.85 might need to be built on to win this race. I’m all about Evolution at odds of 3/1 to overcome a tricky draw and win this heat for Owen McKenna.

Heat 5 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Droopys Metaphor – 3/1

(2) Pharis Jerry– 33/1

(3) Toolmaker Curio – 10/1

(4) Crokers Sydney – 16/1

(5) A Lucky Julie – 9/2

(6) Seven Beach – 8/15

Tip

Seven Beach looks to have lengths to spare on everyone in this heat at odds of 8/15 for trainer Jennifer O’Donnell. However, the early pace of Droopys Metaphor with odds of 3/1 would be my each-way bet here.

Heat 6 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Rolo Bucks – 8/1

(2) Rushy Meadows – 11/4

(3) Jaytee Craze – 13/8

(4) Dark Dilemma – 9/4

(5) Aikins Lad – 50/1

(6) Glenlara Blue – 5/1

Tip

Jaytee Craze is the 13/8 favourite for trainer Paul Hennessy coming to his recent win over 600 yards in Shelbourne Park last month. However, I think Rushy Meadows is going under the radar for the win here at 11/4.

Heat 7 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Swords Hero - 7/1

(2) Newport Pier – 16/1

(3) Glendale Zozo – 6/1

(4) Whyaye Bonnyland – 9/4

(5) Dynamic Force – EVS

(6) Greenwell Coe – 8/1

Tip

Dynamic Force is EVS favourite following its 28.27 win over the 525-yard trip at Curraheen Park at the beginning of this month. However, I feel this is one of the hardest heats to predict and one I would avoid. If pushed, Greenwell Coe at 8/1 looks a progressive sort.

Heat 8 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Superfast Gordon – 5/2

(2) Highview Splash – 3/1

(3) Tinahue Paopone – 12/1

(4) Extra Gain – 14/1

(5) Undulation – 6/4

(6) Magical Sapphire – 4/1

Tip

Another difficult heat to predict in the first round. Undulation is ultra-consistent coming in the money positions 23 times in 29 races so is a worthy favourite at 6/4. However that price is far too short for my liking, Highview Splash at 3/1 is my choice.

Heat 9 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Innfield Destiny- 9/4

(2) Chefs Sydney – 25/1

(3) Ballybough Nutz – 6/1

(4) Ballymac Danica – 10/11

(5) Farney Chime – 8/1

(6) Robbies Galaxy – 6/1

Tip

Ballymac Danica is a worthy favourite here considering she has clocked 27.83 for the 525-yard trip and seems to have the legs to finish strongly at odds of 10/11. Those odds are short though and I’m favouring progressive sort Robbies Galaxy at odds of 6/1 each way.

Heat 10 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Radical Scoby 9/2

(2) Randolph Scotts – 3/1

(3) Droopys Bookem – 11/8

(4) Droopys Carbine – 5/1

(5) Down To Business – 5/1

(6) Glitzy Magic – 16/1

Tip

Droopys Bookem at 11/8 looks to be a class above the dogs in this race going off the clocks. Down To Business at 5/1 could be the value play in the market.

Heat 11 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) House Martin - 5/1

(2) Bockos Crystal – 5/1

(3) Bubbly Shadow – 7/1

(4) Callaway Knegare – EVS

(5) Keefill Maverick – 16/1

(6) Tarnsa Maasai – 3/1

Tip

There are some incredibly fast hounds in this heat from veteran Bockos Crystal who is still running well coming off her 4th birthday and is 5/1 to Newstart Callaway Knegare at EVS to land the spoils. Keefill Maverick has some strong Towcester form with a 29.02 trial for the 547-yard trip and has an outside each-way chance at odds of 16/1.

Heat 12 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Da Bold Falcon - 11/8

(2) Ballymac Finn – 5/1

(3) High Trend – 9/4

(4) Clona Duke– 7/2

(5) Casa Miro – 25/1

(6) Esmonde Swift – 14/1

Tip

There’s plenty of pace in Heat 12 traps 2, 3 and 4 having 19, 14 and 19 wins respectively and Da Bold Falcon a new major player on the Open Racing scene. Clona Duke has been lightly raced of late and at odds of 7/2 is my pick.

Heat 13 Preview

Traps & Odds

(1) Coolavanny Otto 6/1

(2) Ventry Faith – 8/1

(3) Air Flyer – 25/1

(4) Ower Cracker – 9/2

(5) Carmac King – 3/1

(6) Bombay Pat – 10/11

Tip

The final heat of the first night of the round has one of the outright market leaders Bombay Pat at odds of 10/11 to win this heat. However, he’s arguably yet to face this quality of field and so my bet is Carmac King each way at odds of 3/1.
