I Am Maximus Lands Willie Mullins Second BoyleSports Irish Grand National

The Willie Mullins-trained I Am Maximus landed a blow for punters as he was backed into 8/1 from 14/1 with the sponsors before claiming victory in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National.

Rachael Blackmore’s mount Amirite went off the 11/2 favourite in Easter Monday’s €500,000 showdown at Fairyhouse, but it was champion jockey Paul Townend who took the plaudits as he dug deep to steer the son of Authorized to victory by a length ahead of Gordon Elliott’s Gevrey.

The victory means Mullins now has two BoyleSports Irish Grand National victories on his CV having broken his duck in 2019 when Burrows Saint landed the spoils under Ruby Walsh.

Mullins will now be eyeing a major double as both Gaillard Du Mesnil and Mr Incredible are prominent in the betting for the Aintree Grand National on Saturday as 12/1 third favourites.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:

“The Mullins/Townend combination and the JP McManus colours were the perfect ingredients for punters in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National and I Am Maximus was very well backed in the 48 hours before the off.

A Grand National double for Willie Mullins would come as no surprise and we anticipate a real spike in support for his runners in Saturday’s big one at Aintree.”
