Cheap Sandwiches
Heat 1
1 Oreo Ollie - 25/1
2 Barefoot O Song– 25/1
3 Ballymac Stud– 4/1
4 Singalong Curly– 10/1
5 Proper Heiress (w) – 3/1
6 Cheap Sandwiches (w) – 4/6
Heat 1 Tips
Tip
The opening semi-final heat will be perceived as the “hotter” of the two, with three of the favourites in the outright market set to do battle: Cheap Sandwiches (5/4), Proper Heiress (4/1) and Ballymac Stud (6/1).
On the inside of Heat (1), we’ve the two outsiders in the field, Oreo Ollie, whose consistency at boxes has had him inside the top two in each of his four appearances in the competition so far, but as a young dog, he will need further improvement. Barefoot On Song could even go swifter away, but will need to replicate her 29.55 best to figure here.
In Trap (3), Ballymac Stud looks an exceptional and has already clocked 29.35 for the 550 earlier in the competition and won’t be 2 years of age until next November, after overcoming trouble last week at odds of 4/1 eachway, he remains a value play. Singalong Dolly beside him in he “coffin trap” was unbeaten in the competition until last week.
The story of this race will naturally be dominated by another battle between the UK Challenger Proper Heiress and the fastest of the competition so far, Cheap Sandwiches, who posted 29.27 last weekend.
Proper Heiress got the better of Cheap Sandwiches in their last tussle, and at odds of 3/1, I think he remains an exceptional bet to win this race.
Magical Mag
Heat 2
1 Happy Jet – 10/1
2 Ballyhooly Bruno – 8/1
3 Magical Mag – 11/8
4 Callaway Five – 10/1
5 Glengar Silent – 2/1
6 Droopys Deploy (w) – 6/1
Heat 2 Tips
Tip
The second of the two semi-finals will be considered the more open of the two heats with all six dogs staking huge qualifying claims at a minimum and by extension all can win the heat, provided things goes their way.
Wearing the red jacket for Pat Buckley is Happy Jet, who, despite failing to land a heat in this year's competition, continues to qualify for connections. Beside him is Ballyhooly Bruno, whom we have consistently tipped for a big run throughout this competition, and following a few fortunate qualifying heats, he was brilliant in victory last weekend in 29.68.
Magical Mag will go off favourite for this race for trainer Pat Guilfoyle, and it’s hard to discount her after a first round third place; she has gone unbeaten with wins in 29.42, 29.51 and 29.69. She will have to show plenty of dash early, though, to get away from Callaway Five in Trap 4, who showed gears in between Cheap Sandwiches last week in 3rd.
Glengar Silent is another lightly-raced dog similar to Ballymac Stud in the earlier heat, and after being fortunate to qualify in 4th in the first round, he’s now gone from strength to strength, failing to miss out of the top-two and though his 29.85 behind Proper Heiress was one of his “slower” runs, he showed tremendous pace in-behind given the trouble he faced.
Droopys Deploy is another worth noting, the strong run sort is a few lengths of early pace away from being one of the serious contenders for the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby, can’t be discounted.
This heat has a nice blend of fast finishers and early pacers. I’d challenge the favourite in this one, and I think Ballyhooly Bruno is drawn for a big run again.
