The BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby continues on Saturday, August 23rd, with the final 72 dogs beginning their journey to fight it out to win one of the sport's biggest prizes.

A total of 144 names went into the draw drum for the opening round of the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park on Monday afternoon. Following Friday’s opener, this will be the final 12 heats of the first round with a straight four to qualify from each, leaving 96 for the second round.

The breakdown of the 144 is 98 inside seeds, 15 middle seeds and 31 wide seeds. Defending champion Bockos Diamond has been drawn in Heat 5, where he will wear the stripes. The final of the classic is scheduled for Saturday, September 27th.

Heats

BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Round 1 Tips – Saturday Heats

Heat 13

1 Callaway Five – 5/2

2 Prince Naseem – 4/1

3 Maireads Diamond – 6/1

4 Badly Behaving – 8/1

5 Flashing Lilac (m) – 2/1

6 Grouchos Hoffa (w) – 10/3

Tip

The first heat from the second night of BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby action looks to be one of the more open betting prospects.

I like the look of Grouchos Hoffa, though, who I think if he can turn close to the front, can continue his progressive start to his career for trainer Dave Bourke.

Tarnsa Maasai

Heat 14

1 De Bold Rose – 12/1

2 Lemon Orla – 4/1

3 Barefoot On Song – 9/2

4 Headleys Trump – 6/1

5 Glengar Silent (m) - 3/1

6 Tarnsa Maasai (w) – 7/4

Tip

Heat 14 for me is all bout the favourite, Tarnsa Maasai is a top-class tracker and looks ideally drawn for a big run in this one.

If looking for something in the each-way markets, Glengar Silent for Pat Buckley looks a nice sort if he can take his 525 form into the 550 trip.

Heat 15

1 Ballymac Kamala – 5//1

2 Untold Rufiyaa – 5/1

3 Happy Jet – 14/1

4 Fahee Phantom -  4/1

5 Carrick Scholsey (m) – 10/11

6 Kereight Pimple (w) – 7/1

Tip

Carrick Scholsey is already a Summer Cup Champion , but following a 29.33 run last time out at Shelbourne over the 550-yard distance, there could be more success on the cards for this young son of Droopys Scolari and Droopys Beaufort in the coming weeks and years!

Heat 16

1 Sallagh Curly – 6/1

2 Microchip – 33/1

3 Hopes Teddy – 7/2

4 Magical Major – 8/15

5 Town Lucky (m) – 16/1

6 Ballinbola Jim (w) – 13/2

Tip

There’s a nice blend of both up-and-comers on the Open Racing scene and experienced campaigners in this race. Trap 3 is the Easter Cup Champion, and Trap 6 was a semi-finalist in this event last year. However, I’m favouring Magical Major, who looks like a progressive sort for Patrick Guilfoyle.

Rural Pest

Heat 17

1 Magical On Fire – 3/1

2 Cagey Billy – 12/1

3 Body Mind Spirit – 16/1

4 Bartlemy Mainoo – 6/1

5 Omey Mist (m) – 8/1

6 Rural Pest (w) – 4/6

Tip

Concerning all connections for Heat 17, I’m not sure anyone can have complaints if they don’t qualify from this heat. That being said, Rural Pest for Graham Holland could be flying under the radar if he can take the dog’s 525 form into the 550 trip.

Heat 18

1 Blastoff Heffo – 6/1

2 Ballymac Danica – 2/1

3 Ballymac Stud – 8/11

4 Denied Access – 33/1

5 Rallying Mac (m) – 16/1

6 Alva Mist (w) – 14/1

Tip

The next heat from Saturday night’s card will likely have the betting market dominated by the two Ballymac runners for Liam Dowling, Ballymac Danica and Ballymac Stud. While the latter is likely to go off favourite, I’d favour Ballymac Danica due to her greater experience in Open Class competition.

Callaway Knegare

Heat 19

1 Rolo Tokyo – 7/2

2 Cloverfield Clan – 8/1

3 Barefoot On Fire – 6/1

4 Callaway Knegare – 11/10

5 Cushie The Best (m) – 5/1

6 Upper Horgan (w) – 8/1

Tip

It’s hard to look past 2024 Juvenile Derby winner Callaway Knegare here, one of the outright market favourites and with good reason. Cushie The Best could be finishing fast behind for a runner-up result.

Daleroad Duke

Heat 20

1 Magical Keith – 3/1

2 Daleroad Duke – 6/4

3 Coloursaregreen – 5/2

4 Boylesports Blue – 8/1

5 Blossom Syd (m) – 25/1

6 Magical Sapphire (w) – 6/1

Tip

An unfortunate draw for both trainers, Patrick Guilfoyle, who has Trap 1, Trap 2 and Trap 6 for this race and Paul Hennessy, who has both Trap 3 and Trap 4. Daleroad Duke is the likely favourite, but I think he is best challenged and Boylesports Blue has every chance of winning in this heat..

BoyleSports Bob

Heat 21

1 Faypoint Ranger – 13/8

2 Brunch Pal – 8/1

3 Timmys Bucks – 10/1

4 Daleroad Devon – 6/1

5 Razldazl Kamaria (m) – 6/1

6 Boylesports Bob (w) – 7/4

Tip

Think this is a far more open betting affair than the odds currently suggest.

However, Faypoint Ranger has shown exceptional pace over the 525 distance and should be more than good enough for the step up in distance.

Heat 22

1 Born Braver – 3/1

2 Tetra Destiny – 14/1

3 Lennies Dream – 5/2

4 Da Bold Falcon – 5/1

5 Highview Plan (m) – 16/1

6 Droopys Deploy (w) – 6/4

Tip

It’s all about Droopys Deploy for me in this heat , after getting back to winning form on his last run in a swift 29.44. Da Bold Falcon could be a decent bet to finish as runner-up, given he’s the 600-yard Track Record holder.

Magical Mag

Heat 23

1 Cosmonaut – 10/1

2 Triangle Brando – 25/1

3 Harlequin Coolio – 16/1

4 Magical Mag -8/11

5 Droopys Map (m) -5/1

6 Ballymac Axel (w) – 5/2

Tip

Ballymac Axel is another leading hope for the UK , and following a 29.75 trial around recently, I think he is capable of going even quicker for trainer Murt Leahy. Harlequin Coolio could be one to place at a big price for trainer Scott Phelan.

Heat 24

1 Solo And Go – 5/1

2 Unanimous Leo – 5/1

3 Drveen Lass – 33/1

4 Ventry Faith – 8/1

5 Hot Wood (m) – 6/1

6 Lennies Desire (w) – 4/6

Tip

The final heat of round 1 is likely to have the betting market headed by the Paul Hennessy son go Signet Ace and Free From Desire, Lennies Desire.

If looking to challenge the favourite, one could do worse than looking at Hot Wood .
